Or at least, I'll change my signature ... once I figure out where the field is hidden. o.o

What's the difference?
A well-crafted alpha-blended PNG will look good against any background colour, a GIF will either have to have ugly edges with heavy aliasing, or look damned ugly against backgrounds too difference from that the image creator is expecting — important when you're dealing with a forum that (apart from a current anomaly) offers a choice of several different styles with widely contrasting colour schemes.

But as a general rule you'd make sure your active layer is anything other than a background layer; applying all your text and effects (such as the drop shadow) on that layer and other non-background layers.

Then comes the tricky task of selecting .png in the 'save as' dialog rather than .gif.
I've actually just found that Photoshop CS2 has a handy alpha PNG exporter, it's pretty good (used it for my sig). Don't remember where I found it thought.

I <3 Kaylee. Who doesn't? Greg and I talked about Jewel Staite at the last meet actually.

Bteo, Alpha layer PNG's. I haven't made the full switch over yet. As of April, 37% of the 'market' still used IE6 which is more than the percentage using IE7 or FireFox. IE6 doesn't support alpha layer transparencies (as I'm assuming you well know).

Yup. Some day I'll swap but right now the percentage of browsers that support Alpha layer transparencies is still below 60%.

As for Photoshop, going to "Save for Web" (or in CS3, "Save For Web & Devices") and selecting PNG from the drop down is the best way. File -> Save As, is not a good option for saving web formats out of Photoshop.

I have issues with resizing images, so pardon the cloth-like look to it.

My eyes want to see you outside the school gates at half-past three, Fuggly.

I'm hoping to find a good picture of ol' Dreamy - the source of all fiction, dontcherknow - in the next couple of days. So - much to Deacon's assumed chagrin - I'm calling dibs on him.

One of my ideas is already used.

But I personally liked Cuthbert better, but I don't think there are any pictures of him around.
