adciv, it's not "the current spelling" but rather "the English spelling." Mary is Maria in Spanish, right? John is Juan? Or Ivan in Russian? Same kind of thing.

Deacon, not really, as the spelling rarely changed when the language did, other than when new alphabets were used for the new language. The three alphabets used, Hebrew, Greek and Roman, had different letters and associated pronunciations. Other than that, there has been one change in the Roman alphabet spelling in the 1600's. Other than that, the spelling has remained the same so far as I know and the pronunciation has differed slightly. (i.e., Spanish uses the same spelling as English)

Yeah, "John" is spelled just like "Ivan" which is just like "Juan" right? Come on. Different languages, different versions of the same name. You think the Hebrews spelled it "God"?

Seriously, though, I wonder how many of these kids will break with their parents over the course of their lives and grow up substantially different from them, and how many will be younger versions of their elders; and at the same time, how /that/ will break down by child age.

I hope a bunch of them make it and, if nothing else, come to resemble their parents through choice, instead of just the weight of socio/familial pressure never giving them (much of) a change...

Just for the record, I'm pretty sure the family is Southern Baptist. We had a similar Baptist family in Mitchell whom I somewhat befriended. They had 10 children, all with Biblical "N" names. The women all wore dresses and all the kids were homeschooled. When one of older girls came home to visit, I had a strong inkling that she no longer wore skirts all the time. She also seemed to be wearing makeup and had a "fancy" (read: Not stick-straight and down to her butt) hair do. I'm pretty sure some of the kids will just break away from such things in this family too.

Yep, probably around the time they head to college. I was raised fairly strictly southern baptist but my views have changed tremendously now that I'm out on my own. Oddly enough so have my mother's. Maybe I'm rubbing off on her or something. It's not a bad way to grow up, but at some point you just have to start asking yourself how you really feel about certain things and deciding your stance on those issues.
