'Another' needs an 'r'.

hehe let me guess, not only is it the 8th aniversary of RL, but greg also managed to tap the 2000th comic on the same day huh?:) it's hard to tell now that he's using dates for the comic filenames.
15th November 07 Have you been playing portal?
Hey, I noticed that in the last two squares in the comic 15/11 07 there is some text from the game "Portal" -http://www.whatistheorangebox.com/portal.html
For example the drawn cake, and the text "The cake is a lie! The cake is a lie!" Nice detail!

Oh, come on, Greg... a Portal reference without a companion cube? How could you do that?

How close are we to 2000 strips anyway? Was this it? Is that the joke?
Quick math shows that if Greg had updated every weekday it would have taken about 7.7 years to have 2000 strips and we are definitely past that point, but as we are all aware, there have been instances of downtime. It would have been crazy ironic if both were at the same time.

Ok, so I'm a geek. I just went through the archives and broke it down. Not counting guest strips and "filler" strips that have a date (I don't know how Greg accounts for either) I got a total of 1975 days with comics on the archive pages. I think I may have been a few off though because when I did a check on comic 1000, I think I had it counted as 999, but it should be close.
The breakdown is as follows:
1999 40
2000 308
2001 247
2002 251
2003 251
2004 253
2005 249
2006 185
2007 191
In general 20 is the minimum number of comics a month will have if Greg does no weekend updates and 23 is the maximum. This is reflected in the comics in most years where comic totals come out around 250 comics per year. Also, I realized the comic was not updated a lot in 2006, but I didn't realize exactly how bad it was until today especially considering that I think at least one week in there is guest strips.
For those that care, here are the 10 months with the minimum number of comics:
16 May 2001, November 2005, July 2006, September 2006
15 December 2006
14 February 2007
13 January 2006, April 2006, June 2007
10 March 2006
Edit: I found 1500 and did a check and I was exactly correct so either I accidentally corrected my error with the opposing error or when I was checking my work was when I made the math mistake

By my reckoning this is comic #1973. Interesting that your figures suggest two more (although I might know where you're getting one of those two.)

The file name for todays comic is 20071115_1953.png
Now, I don't know about you, but 1953 would be my guess.

I think the joke is that he's so close to 2000 strips that it's so unlikely that he won't reach it.marsman57 wrote:How close are we to 2000 strips anyway? Was this it? Is that the joke?
Nobody's perfect, but it's always nobody's fault. It sure is hard being nobody.

It's actually a bit lower than 1953.... I've been meaning to go through my archives and do a complete audit to know where I REALLY stand, but it's probably closer to 1940 or so, considering some of the filler comics, and accounting for numerical errors. That's one of the things I plan on doing once I'm doing this full-time.

So, will this happen before or after Martin changes the forum logo to point to the comic?Greg Dean wrote: That's one of the things I plan on doing once I'm doing this full-time.

1940??! Well, time to fight the Germans I guess.Greg Dean wrote:It's actually a bit lower than 1953.... 2000 strips by end of January '08 methinks, depending on whether Greg counts the guest strips during his move.
Re: 11-15-2007 - Extravaganza!
I could help with that. Do you want to remove only fillers from the official numbering or fillers and guest comics (considering you never included guest comics in the book)?Greg Dean wrote:It's actually a bit lower than 1953.... Fillers as well as guest comics - and additionally, if you could make a note of WHICH dates are fillers/guest comics, that would be helpful as well, since I plan on renumbering my originals to match.
