Adobe hates Vista

Post by ampersand » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:18 pm

Today I upgraded to Vista. One very large problem: it took all of my files and put them into a windows.old program. Then it wiped out all of my saved links and stuff on Firefox and Explorer. And, I can't seem to open any of my Adobe programs, especially Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. Vista claims that the problem is with Acrobat Reader and I should download a new version. Except, I already have the latest version and adobe.com seems to be down for some strange reason.

Any suggestions?

First, you should have backed up everything before upgrading.

Second, start with reinstalling Adobe. Then, run it under an admin account and see if it works then.

Third, Checking Adobe's site helps.

Weird, I've not had a problem with any of my Adobe products and Vista.

Not to sound like a total nerd, but (unless you're using Reader to make PDFs) you should take a look at Foxit Reader. It's much faster and smaller, and works just as well (I don't know if you can make PDFs though).

Well, it turns out that you have to reinstall damn near everything since upgrading to Vista pretty much neuters every program you have on your computer pre-Vista. On the bright side, it allowed me to delete a whole a lot of stuff.

Delete or uninstall?

A coda to my tale of woe. I ended up giving my computer my sister, since she needed a newer computer more than I did. But she was having the same problem that I was. So we were there, and discovered that there's a program that comes with vista that when you run through the old programs through it, can make most programs Vista capable, and you can even burn a CD of it and install it on your old computer before you make the transfer. None of this was mentioned in any documentation of Vista I saw.

I ended up hitting my head against the wall many times that night.

And yet you're not going to tell us what this program is?

I'm struggling not to scream at you right now. I might explode.

Windows Easy Transfer File

It's rather devious how much money you could actually spend on upgrading and adding peripheral products for Vista.
