new video card, to purge?
new video card, to purge?
Hi all, so i just got a new video card, an 8800gt, and im wondering if i should purge the video drivers first. Im upgrading from an nvidia 7900, both from EVGA. I seem to remember hearing nvidia is a lot better about switching to a new card with their drivers (to ati i guess)...
so should i purge the old drivers? if so, whats the best way?
thanks

Eh, you don't need to, but it won't hurt if you do. I don't usually remove video drivers unless I'm changing from ATI to nVidia or vice-versa. Do make sure to update to the latest drivers after installing, though.

I know for ATI cards at least that removing all the old is very important.

That's because ATi sucks.

Agreed, and because AMD threw in their hat with ATI, they're slowly beginning to suck as much. Anybody else remember when it was easy to find an AMD motherboard that supported SLI?

Re: new video card, to purge?
Perhaps he should have been more specific. He probably meant a good, modern motherboard with SLI. (Though, personally, I think SLI is overrated, and nForce 590 chipset boards are still pretty damn good.)

Re: new video card, to purge?
nVidia hasn't released a new chipset since the 590.
The 600-series chipsets are identical in features, just rebadged to work with Intel.

No, they are similar, but they have different features. Not only that, but there are variations of each for Intel and AMD, though you're right in that the nForce 500 series is mostly used for AMD boards and the nForce 600 series is mostly used for Intel boards.
