The Obligatory "Help me with my computer upgrade" thread!
Re: The Obligatory "Help me with my computer upgrade" thread!
Well unfortunately I find out that the motherboard I had previously choosen was NOT SLI capable so I have to find another. Also the 8800vid card I wanted has also gone out of sale.
Any advice on a new MB (that is supported by my RAM and Processor) and a good 8800 card that isn't over 300?
Temporary Spec Set-Up:
Video Card
Power Supply
Memoryx2
Motherboard
Processor
Couple questions, which vid card is a bit more reliable?

Go with XFX and that motherboard is fine, but you're wasting your money going with SLI.
I need fewer water.

So it's not a smart "future" upgrade choice to go with SLI to just add a 2nd card in 1-2yrs instead "tossing" the old card for a new card in a non-SLI board?Arc Orion wrote:Go with XFX and that motherboard is fine, but you're wasting your money going with SLI.

In one to two years, you'll likely have a hell of a time even finding specific modern video cards. More than likely, you'll have to pay more than it's actually worth, when you can just buy a new video card for a little more that will offer a much better improvement in performance.

So go Non-SLI motherboard and just get a 2yr "capable" Vid?Arc Orion wrote:In one to two years, you'll likely have a hell of a time even finding specific modern video cards. That's what I'd do, unless intending to use SLI now or going with more than two monitors.

Hmm, not enough in the budget to do SLI atm. So based on my current MB and Vid, what should be my better options for toning down my MB while increasing my vid?Arc Orion wrote:That's what I'd do, unless intending to use SLI now or going with more than two monitors.

Keep the same video card. The motherboard is fine, really, but I'd just consider something lesser unless you plan to use the features other than SLI with it.

Say... multi monitor using both video cards?

If the board supports the proc, you just swap it. A BIOS update should only be needed if it doesn't support the proc without it.
