Hey Greg I've sent you an e-mail once or twice but I don't post in here cause I just never know quite what to say. Anyways just wanted to tell ya that I think I may have found some websites that could be of use to ya.

As for the year of your Beetle I couldn't remember so I took a guess so here's a link for a Chilton's book for 98-00.

Here is another place that seems to have a Forum for Beetle owners to talk about their problem with their vehicle and it looks like its one of those places that people that read "Cars for Dummies" (like myself) can go and ask questions.

Now I don't know if you've already gone to these places or not but I wanted to help you in anyway I could. You've kept me laughing for years now and you and Liz are just great people in general. Plus I fully understand wishing at times that we were geeky about cars. My brother-in-law can hear an engine from a block down tell you what it is and probably tell you what's wrong with it too. He's just freakish like that, but he couldn't set up a sweet sound system like we could (well before they color coded everything, took the place in the world for us geeks out). Anyways I hope you can figure a way to fix it for cheaper. Keep on trucking. :D

Had to join so I could add my $0.02. Greg, it is entirely possible to be both a computer geek and a car geek (in response to your lament on the main page) . I've been the former since birth and the latter for about the past 10 years (since I started driving, really). I code by day and rebuild engines by night... or something like that.

Anyway, a few thoughts on your car problem. Are you 100% sure that its the clutch itself that's worn out? What exactly are the symptoms? Does the pedal operate normally or is it on the floor? Does the motor rev up when you try to accelerate but you just go nowhere? The former is simple (master or slave cylinder) and could likely be fixed by you, the latter is not ($1100 clutch replacement).

... I'm a computer geek... AND a car geek. After I bought my newest car (2 years ago) I started doing almost everything myself :) Now I've got a heavily modded car. It's more fun to have than a heavily modded PC IMO. More people see it :D

Used to be PC geek, now OLD car geek... you know, the ones you can actually see engline when open the lid :) a lil link to my favourite (no NOT the porsche one) - Skoda 110R Coupe 1.1L yrs 69-81 (yes, freakin 12 with hardly any modernisation :) )

liz: so the pedal appears to be working then? I dont know about VW but many cars use brake fluid for clutch, brakes appear to work normally?

Still I encourage you to find some VW car club forums and post there, can save you some nice bucks.

I've been building Volkswagens since about 1999.
My current car is a 1992 GTI with a 135bhp 2.0L Crossflow 8 valve motor (ported and polished head, combustion chamber polish, Titanium valve spring retainers, heavy duty valve springs, 260° camshaft) with Motronic engine management with a Neuspeed chip (original management was a flaky system known as Digifant2 and the original motor is a 105bhp 1.8L counterflow 8 valve) and it's rolling on a set of Polished Porsche Design 90 wheels (when it's not winter)

Much more fun then a fancy looking PC.

I think both interests work on the same principle... namely more speed, power, the ability to tinker with the internal bits be they processors and RAM or fuel injectors and camshafts. Me, I just can't stand not ripping something apart and figuring out how it works. Being able to fix it logically follows.
