03 March 2008 - Lord's Vineyard
Re: 03 March 2008 - Lord's Vineyard
Never crossed my mind. Been 10 years since I've been to church. Been a few months since I last saw Dogma. And it honestly just didn't occur to me. I just needed to be reminded is all.

Nice one, Greg. Very esoteric. Fantastic new view in the 4th panel... was that all original art?
I googled "the Lord's Vineyard" and didn't come up with any lakes... Is this someplace you and Liz actually went, or just made up for the joke?

Re: 03 March 2008 - Lord's Vineyard
Well, we didn't GO there, but there is a sign for "The Lord's Vineyard" on 183 heading out of Austin towards Lockhart. Liz and I saw it and thought it was kind of funny, since Jesus was able to turn water into wine. That's all.
I'm honestly surprised some people didn't get it. I thought Jesus turning water into wine was one of those things everyone knew, religious or otherwise.

Oh I knew, it just took a bit of a nudge to dislodge it from the deep recesses of my memory. It was right alongside all the other stuff that usually has me lost on the jokes and references in the RLC IRC channel until 5 minutes later.

I never cease to be amazed by how ignorant most people are about "basic" religious tenants, even of the major religions of the world. I had a friend ask me yesterday what a Pharisee is.Greg Dean wrote:Well, we didn't GO there, but there is a sign for "The Lord's Vineyard" on 183 heading out of Austin towards Lockhart. Yeah, tell that to all the people that think Buddha is that fat smiling guy you see in Chinese Restaurants. That's something I definitely won't explain.

/facepalm
I needed this thread to get it, and I don't know why. I'm actually pretty knowledgeable on Christianity and a few other faiths

Re: 03 March 2008 - Lord's Vineyard
lol, man I was a Catholic for 15 years and it even went over my head. I thought that the vineyard was across the lake and that Jesus walked across it to get to said vineyard... Like a really effective moat or something.
Re: 03 March 2008 - Lord's Vineyard
When I first read the comic, I thought the joke had something to do with the fact we're about to enter the rainy season here in Lockhart, and that the vineyard was flooded out. I got what the actual joke was a couple hours later.

I haven't been a practicing Catholic (or otherwise) for something like ten years and I still got it. Some of y'all are slow. o.O

Yes, yes we are. No other excuse for it.

Nick's thought process after seeing the comic:
"You know, I know Jesus walked on water but um...damn...uh...maybe I should try checking the forums for an answer?"

*sees reponses*
"OH, DUH. Dammit, how did I forget he did THAT?"
Ignorance nothing, some of us just plumb forgot.

You can find a lot of people versed in a single religion (although that opinion has been shaken to its core now), but very hard to find people that have anything past rudimentary knowledge of religions other than their own. That's just how it is. It's not just religion, but cultures, countries, languages as well, amongst other things.

Re: 03 March 2008 - Lord's Vineyard
I read a children's bible, as a child. I have read other myths and legends from traditions of a lot of cultures. I can remember Zeus's "golden shower", Thor in drag, chinese ghosts eaten by drawn tigers, and Anansi the spider tricking a foe into cooking himself.
Trying to peg one miracle in one tradition without actually naming "Jesus" doesn't even narrow the reference to the right testament. Plus, it's a lake and mountains. Beautiful countryside... but really not that obvious.
Well, 'till now, anyway.
Context is important, and not everybody shares it.
