Switchgrass. Great for ethanol from cellulose. Can grow in most any condition and doesn't require fertilizers.

Fuck it. Lets just genetically engineer a giant hamster and build a gargantuan wheel/generator for him to run in.

You'd need to feed the giant hamster.

bringing this back...

i'm in an energy class, and just for fun we did a thermodynamic analysis of this claim... given the amount of solar energy that arrives at the earth's surface and the efficiency of photosynthetic processes... this claim is not even close to realistic. that said, it would still represent about an order of magnitude advantage over corn for fuel production. pretty cool.

Care to post the numbers so we can see them? Or do you just want us to take your word for it?

Question: Does this algae require fresh water or can it be grown in salt water?

I see a lot of ocean out there that could be used for this type of thing, assuming you could handle the processing on atolls.

Depends on the species, but yes.

You don't process on atolls. The product is stored in moored, floating containers, and tankers come up to siphon off of the tanks, though if they're close enough pipelines may be run. However, I see these being placed near the equator to minimize the risk of storms damaging them, and to get maximum sunlight.

My point is, though, we've been talking about how much landmass these 'fields' would consume. If we can do the harvesting on open ocean, that - to me - would be a preferable option.

True. It's also less likely to upset what may be sensitive ecologies. But it introduces an additional transportation element, as well as additional risks that come with anything that sits at sea.
