2008 Apr 3 - 2001 aftermath

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

About all I can say about Mr Jordan is that he's really good at telling the same story 10 different ways...without his readers figuring it out.

And, you'll love Lonesome Dove. The miniseries wasn't half bad either. I bought the DVD. Then again, I've got a bit of Robert Duvall <3, though, and Tommy Lee Jones kicks butt. Just about everyone was in it. Let me know if you want to borrow once you read the book, now that you're local, Dreamer.

That's because he wanted to end it at book five or six and his wife and publisher convinced him to drag it out longer. My advice is to read the first book and pretend that they win absolutely at the end and stop there.

You've got to be kidding me right? Am I the only one who just wanted to punch Edward Furlong in the face the whole way through?

You just lost all credibility. It was one of the worst sci-fi movies ever. They butchered the book, the story, the plot and raped the whole idea behind it. The writers should be executed and the producers bared from Hollywood. Every change they made in it was for the worse. Which means they probably won an emmy and are on Hollywoods shortlist. F'in idiots.
And even if that hadn't been true, it was the most arsine military operation that ever existed. I could have defeated their entire force with my rifle platoon, an infantry company would have been overkill.

Avian carriers can provide high delay, low throughput, and low altitude service. The connection topology is limited to a single point-to-point path for each carrier, used with standard carriers, but many carriers can be used without significant interference with each other, outside of early spring. This is because of the 3D ether space available to the carriers, in contrast to the 1D ether used by IEEE802.3.

Yes, where as the roughnecks from the book could wipe out a brigade in five minutes (if that).

Seriously, what kind of operation was it, with no artillery, not even any sort of turrets, no air support, nothing?

I'm trying to think of a sci-fi movie I like better, and so far I can't.

One thing that I took back from watching 2001 was the scene at the start with the monkeys. For a while I was perplexed as to whether they were real monkeys or guys in suits. Then when the "monkeys" started jumping about, showing their long legs, the cat was out of the bag.

I completely agree about I Robot, Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers. Decent cheesy movies, much better books. Especially I Robot.

Still! That sounds interesting, and I would like to see it at some time. I may have to take you up on this movie thing, may as well spread some obscure movies I love like Le Dernier Combat and The City of Lost Children around while I'm seeing movies I mean to see, anyway... :P
I just saw The City of Lost Children today, and I rely liked it. It reminded me of Bioshock with the steampunk atmosphere and child kidnapping. (i found out about it throught Zero Punctuation)

I'd say that was a rhetorical question. He's continuing the "militarily, it was a POS" line. The Mobile Infantry suits replaced tanks, armored personnel carries, close air support, artillery support, etc. If you don't use the suits, then you need the other things. They had nothing, except POS wonder guns.

Even such a basic thing as the transport ships. The bugs have anti-space defenses (well, bugs that shit plasma fire anyway) so you're going to park your ships in orbit and wait for them to be blasted? ARRRRRRG!

I wasn't sure if he was talking about the SST book, SST movie or one of the others that had cropped up in here. I remember that part of the book. Yeah, they had jack for equipment. We could have done better with todays technology than they did. Body armor and a gun was all they had. In the book, they had full combat suits that carried around 1/4kton hand grenades.
