While Jurassic Park was a fantastic book (and the sequels were actually pretty great, too, unlike the movies), I wouldn't say it's a cheesy movie.schwal wrote:I completely agree about I Robot, Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers. Decent cheesy movies, much better books.

Yeah, come on. You can say the book is better than the movie with certainty, but listing Jurassic Park alongside I Robot and Starship Troopers seems a bit far to take things.
To me, Jurassic Park is one of those instances where the movie differs from the book but for the right reasons. Less math (I like math too but c'mon), more movie thrills. I also appreciate that they didn't try to do effects they didn't think they could do, because it would have killed the movie's feel to have something rubbery flying around on strings. Sure, it wasn't the book and I enjoyed the book much more. But if the movie had been more like the book, I still think it would have been a less entertaining film.

All this talk about Robert Jordan finally prompted me to buy the WoT Box Set #1 from Amazon. My understanding is the first three books (which is what the set contains) are pretty much the best in the series, and it kind of runs downhill after that. We'll see.

Am I the only person in the world that didn't particularly like the Jurassic Park movie? And for proof that it was cheesy: the outhouse scene. no more needs to be said.Deacon wrote:While Jurassic Park was a fantastic book (and the sequels were actually pretty great, too, unlike the movies), I wouldn't say it's a cheesy movie.schwal wrote:I completely agree about I Robot, Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers. I didn't particularly like Jurassic Park, either. But that was because I thought the concept of someone creating an island full of dinosaurs was a really stupid idea. It was a good book, but the entire time I was reading it, I kept thinking "who would be stupid enough to resurrect dinosaurs....".schwal wrote: Am I the only person in the world that didn't particularly like the Jurassic Park movie?

Apparently CS22 post-dates the I like dinosaur craze a number of us grew up with.

No offense intended CS22, but I'm sort of surprised you even believe dinosaurs existed.
And Schwal, like I'd beat up one of the forum's few remaining New Englanders. That wouldn't go well with the local mentality of Boston being the "Hub of the Univ-us" and all, now would it?

Which was of course the whole point of that book. Micheal Crichton wrote Jurassic Park to illustrate just how stupid it would be.collegestudent22 wrote:I didn't particularly like Jurassic Park, either. My personal opinion on Jurassic Park movie, is that it is by far the best dinosaur movie ever made. Of course that doesn't mean it's a good movie, just better than all the competition. That said, it was worthwhile to watch, even if it wasn't a great movie.
As far as the book goes, I didn't read the whole book because the first 100 pages (excepting the prologue) were so ridiculously boring I couldn't get back to the interesting part (granted I was in 7th grade when I tried). Not that his propensity for science is a turn off, it's just that there was nothing else going on to offset the dry science talk. And therefor I can't really compare the two (book and movie).
