2008-4-10: Fry's: the Geek Mecca

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

If I had a card to spare, I'd be happy to let you guys have it. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with a GeForce FX 5200 [the 128MB model with 1x VGA, S-Video out, and DVI], and don't have a job so I can't go out and buy the card I linked to.

I hate being legally blind, hard of hearing, and stuck in friggin' Katy, where there isn't any public transportation available... *depressed*

Ok, I have read the comic for a long time and HAD to register and post now because I REALLY want to know where that bawls hat came from?! Is that made up or is there a place to buy it? That is the best thing ever.

it kind of worries me that the ice packs are for his balls, and not his bawls...

i'm trying to figure out if that was a typo, or intentional mispelling of bawls to get that joke out:)

Unless someone has one of those static-free plastic packages for the cards...I see packaging issues.

Alas...One can not simply WALK into Fry's....

Typo is intentional. I'd bet my life on it. Unless I'm wrong -- and I'm never wrong, the "Heh" is the key to knowing it's not a typo by accident.

But... keeping ones... um... low-hangers  cool is typically for assisting with having a child. I know I'm reading too much into it, but hey. I love to poke anthills with sticks. I'm just cruel that way.

So... Is cartoon Greg and Liz trying to get kids?

I have a spare video card that you can have. It is an ATi Radeon 9550. It is a souped up version with extra RAM and is clocked higher than the usual stock one.

The thing works just fine. It is in my file server ATM, but a new MoBo for the file server is on the way from newegg so I'll be going PCI-e now (I have an 8500 with DVI and HDMI out sitting on my desk waiting to go in).

Let me know!

EDIT - I just did some looking - I also have in hand right now an ATi Radeo 9800 that is not being used at all. So I give choices of free stuffs!

Going to Fry's is truly an excursion to be prepared for. I don't have one anywhere close to where I live, so I only get to go there on my trips to Vegas. The first time I went there, I was in the place for four solid hours. I actually had to make a trip outside halfway through for a smoke break. Thankfully the Vegas Fry's has a snack bar inside.

On a side note, I'm not sure how I missed this comic all this time. I just found it from a reddit link on Monday. Needless to say the last three days at work have been unproductive as I've spent it catching up.

Welcome to the club! Except for the old timers I think we have all been through that! Personally - I've done it three times!

Just a slight nitpick. I wouldn't call Fry's a Geek Mecca. It's more like a shrine than anything else, really.

So it's my ex-girlfriend's birthday today. As per usual, I wished her happy birthday (that and merry Christmas are about the only words sent between us nowadays). I don't want to be "that ex who calls all the time."
So I don't.

But after 4 years and another girlfriend later, I still miss her. I do. It's like I'm a walking Death Cab song.
So I bet you're going, "John. Where are you going this this? How does this relate to THE COMIC AND THE CHARACTERS?"

Her name... Ehh, it's not important. What is important is that back in high school (we started dating when I was a senior), she painted a mural. And signed it. With her initials. CAK. And she sort of earned it as a nickname (an old theatre teacher would freak out if anyone said even the word "hell". So we would be on opposite sides of the stage, and one person would go "Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack," and the next person would go "Andballs."
(Oh, while I'm at it, here is the strip from the day we started dating)

Well, I was drinking a TON of Bawls back then. It was like the only soda I drank. And I was as happy as can be. I had my Cak in one hand and my Bawls in the other. Similar jokes were made.
Anyway, it IS her birthday. And I still love her. So this strip made me think about her.

Greg, since I didn't chime in the other day, I'm going to put my two cents in now. The strip is better than ever. While the adventures were always fun, I've felt that as I've grown, the strip has grown with me. I'm finding myself enjoying Real Life more now than I ever did before. And it's not just 'cause y'all are in Texas now. Seeing as I read about half the webcomics I used to, that's a big deal. I'd understand if you one day had to stop making the comic. I can't imagine it brings in a ton of money. And if the passion goes away, what's left to keep you doing it? Liz, thanks for supporting him through all of this. It helps that you were a fan of the strip in the first place. But thanks. The musings between Comic You and Comic Greg have been a welcome break from, well, the above.
And if y'all're ever in the Houston area and need help, I almost feel like it's my obligation to do so after what y'all have given me.

Oh, and grab a video card off of ebay. The people who always have to buy the most recent card put theirs up there. And half.com could also be a good source.
