May 05 2008- James Patterson

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Aaron does the same thing. I can put a book down in the middle of a sentence if I have to, no matter how good it is. I do it at work all the time. Aaron, on the other hand, has to be at the end of a page, preferably a chapter, or he has a hard time when he picks it back up. Not an attention span thing - just a preference.

I love the Patterson "Alex Cross" series. I haven't really read any of his other stuff, although the boss has one of the "Women's Murder (whatever)" series at work that I may pick up some day when bored. I tend to go through cycles in what I prefer in writing: psychothrillers, murder mysteries, fantasy, romance, a mix of the last two, etc.

I haven't met a book that did that for me since Clive Barker's "Weaveworld" and John Irving's "A son of the circus". Not that all of the other books I've read are crappy, but I don't feel the need to drop whatever it is I'm doing and pick it up again because I can't stop thinking about it.

That's because you haven't done as I have commanded and read "The Name of the Wind." You'll understand what that's like when you read that gem of a book. :)

But those copies aren't the only copies and to truly protect the ignorant masses you'd have to go to the next step. Burn every copy! Including the original computer copy! And any backups!

... And James Patterson!

Thats how I felt about the WoT books by Jordon... After the 4th book I just couldn't stand it anymore. Never finished any of the plot points, just kept going on and on...

Thank I'll avoid patterson for that reason.

I'm reading through The Eye of the World right now as part of the first three books I bought in a collection, and it's been recommended to me that I go ahead and stop after the third book, just pretend that everything was wrapped up, and save myself the grief.

I have to say that I agree with what this reviewer said about the Wheel of Time series.
Publishers Weekly wrote:The breakneck pace, lyrical beauty and astonishing scope of the early Wheel of Time volumes established Jordan as one of the top writers in the Tolkien tradition. While more recent entries have maintained that beauty and scope, the pace has slowed to a crawl as the central characters dispersed in six directions. In contrast, the latest explodes with motion...
I stuck with it because I wanted to see how the story ended, but it wasn't until I read book 11 that I had any hope of it ending well. Then, of course, Robert Jordan died with the series still incomplete. :x

I sincerely recommend the same thing. The series peaked at book three IMHO. Hinting at a lot of misteries that were revealed to be big letdowns afterwards. The main characters turned into whiny little creeps and the plots kept piling on.

Jordan should have killed about half of them, G.R.R. Martin style.

Hopefully Sanderson will be able to finish the series in a way that conforms more to the early books.

Exactly... if your going to add more plots you need to wrap some of the old ones up.
It really was a pitty... It was a rich world building experience with lots of depth to it, and I found some of the mini plots interesting... I'm waiting for the readers digest version though.
