5/20/08: Sometimes All I Need Is The Strip That I Read...

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Probably a college student studying depression because they're going to be a social worker or something. Or they themselves are mopey and don't like people suggesting there's a better option.

God damn bleeding hearts.

I don't know why emos feel the need to cut themselves; there's so many people who would be happy to do it for them.

Emos cut themselves for pleasure. The people I know who cut themselves did it either for attention or because they actually wanted to kill themselves. I'd like to introduce that person to a few people I've known over the years and teach them a thing or two about being depressed or anxious.

Cutting is typically done to replace psychological pain with physical pain. I wouldn't call that "for pleasure".

The pain caused by cutting releases endorphins, causing pleasure. Start reading.

Yes, I know. However, most people who use self mutilation use it to manage pain rather than to seek some endorphin high. That is why I said "typically".

Well, first off, I have to lead with this: Blue October kicks ass. Period.

Now, with that outta the way, I would like to say that i was a bit ... heartbroken when my favorite online comic (hell, my favorite comic) decided to bash my favorite band. But, I'll get over it.

And, as far as what the "pissant reader" said, I almost have to agree, except for one thing: this is a frickin comic. And whether or not you really understand depression isn't my thing to decide, but for G-man's sake, take it all with a freaking grain of salt. People get too worked up over shit. I mean, maybe you don't understand depression and all that. But I would consider you a very lucky person not to have to experience it.

But yeah, depression sucks. I know, I'm in it. But on the flip side, Greg is right; I mean, heck, their other big song is "Hate Me" ... basically a letter to the head singer's mom saying to just hate him already for all the stuff he's done for her.

I wouldn't put "Calling You" in the list of creepy love songs, tho. I see it as more affectionate, caring, and ... well, just depressed, worried he's going to lose her. That's what depression does. But if you want a creepy love song, think about "Invisible" by Clay Aiken (we play it at work, I don't listen voluntarily). I mean, "If I was invisible, I would watch you in your sleep....Wait, I already am?" I mean, that's enough to send shivers down any straight man's spine.

Ok. I'm done. Srsly.
I have nothing useful to put here.

You people want songs about creepy stalkers? Try Sonata Arctica's entire "Silence" album. One of my favorite bands, and one of their best albums, but sometimes I think the lyrics don't translate perfectly well from Finnish.
My slow descent into madness seems to have abruptly become a flaming plunge.

Son, you need help. Now I ain't talkin' 'bout the kind of "help" they give you at therapy sessions, or self-help groups, or church meetings. You need to let jokes into your heart. Son, you need to accept them into your heart as your personal saviour, and be reborn, washed white in the blood of that guy who just slipped on a banana peel and fell on his face! Let me hear you say, you say, you say "HALLELUJAH", brother!

Pissant Reader wrote:Hey. I've been a dedicated reader of this comic for 8 years, but today's comic is the first on your site that has motivated me to contact the site. Sadly it is for a very negative reason. Regardless of your opinion of the song referenced in this comic (in fact, I don't favor Blue October), you show a sincere lack of understanding and sympathy for the anxious or the depressed. Your opinion on insecurity and the proper role of man in a relationship are macho and frankly insulting. I will end by saying that I am greatly disappointed by a webcomic that I have followed devoutly for a very long time.
  1. It's a comic.
  2. It's a stereotype.
  3. Stereotypes can be funny if you let them.
  4. Having my own mental issues, I sometimes don't know whether to laugh or cry at this stuff. I've decided it's always better to laugh, and do so now.
  5. Except I'm laughing at the "pissant reader" who didn't laugh. (How's that for insensitivity?)

Or do what all the other geeks do when they're depressed.... play World of Warcraft.

Cutting monsters and other people in a fantastic setting is always preferable to cutting yourself in real life... or listening to creepy "music."

Most Emos are just posers anyway... trying to look cool or something - what the hell do extra buckles and zippers with *no function whatsoever!* and heavy eyeliner have to do with real depression. Blah blah blah, cry me a river. Find yerself a shrink or a useful hobby... or if not useful, something other than moping... and for crying out loud, don't make a gosh-darned song about moping! How that crap sells is beyond me.

Gothtimus Prime.... now that was too funny.

Extra buckles and zippers? Sounds more goth than emo.

You guys keep it up and I'm gonna bring this girl over to kick your asses!

Sorry but anytime I hear emos talking about beating people up, I laugh. Watching emos fight is like watching hippies fight, just a bunch of really rough hugging.
