I use a safety pin, that little hole on the top of the phone is wher you push in and the slot for the sim card pops on out. And BTW I love my iphone and will be in line for the new one. Also, I saw a demo with a apple rep he took a key to the screen and didn't leave a mark the thing is durable.Greg Dean wrote:Giz alluded to the fact that you used to be able to get it out with a paperclip. *shrug*

Yeah. The bigger screen is just right for watching a show during lunch. With Beyond TV, I record all my shows and drop them in to iTunes automatically. Then I can cath up on my shows during my lunch breaks.Deacon wrote:And I have an 80GB iPod Classic, and on trips (i.e. on a plane) I often watch TV shows and movies on it, and the iPhone would be a massive upgrade for that. While maybe not in terms of total raw capacity, DEFINITELY in video size and quality. The iPhone's screen is a wide format and is approximately two and a half times the size of the Classic's. I'm so looking forward to that.
However, I still keep my Classic around for music. The iPhone seriously needs more storage space... 16GB just doesn't cut it.

Well the new iPhone is what they call "3G" phone. And WCDMA (or UMTS, whichever you like to call it) is the third generation of said family.Deacon wrote:What? It's a GSM pone.RiffRaff wrote:It probably supports AMR-WB which offers superior audio quality. Downside is that call times using WCDMA are about half of GSM due to higher power consumption.

The SIM card looks odd. Is it just a normal SIM card in a little holder of some sort, or what?Suppoko wrote:I use a safety pin, that little hole on the top of the phone is wher you push in and the slot for the sim card pops on out.

yeah it's just a little metal/plastic holder you place the sim into and slide into the phoneDeacon wrote:The SIM card looks odd. I don't see what's wrong with getting a decent MP3-compatible cell phone, putting in a memory card, and just using that. The Shadow has an amazing web browser, large screen, and is very user-friendly -- and costs less than half of the iPhone. So what if it's not a member of the "i" family, it works great.

Wrench, you haven't been reading the thread, have you? The Shadow retails for $350. Instant rebate, it's still $200. Full rebate is $150. The 8GB version of the 3G iPhone is going to retail for $200 before any rebates or sale pricing. So no, it does not cost less than half the price of the new iPhone. In fact, the Shadow costs more than the new 16GB iPhone.
Now, if you're comparing it to the old iPhones, it does cost less, but not the "less than half" you're stating. Retail costs for the old iPhone were $400 and $500, which makes them more expensive, but nowhere near "less than half" the cost of a retail Shadow at $350.

Hmmm. Maybe when my rebate renews in March I'll get one.

Actually, even a 8GB first gen iPhone costs less than a $200 Shadow (at least on AT&T):Arc Orion wrote:Wrench, you haven't been reading the thread, have you? The Shadow retails for $350. Shadow Phone: $200
2 years data service: $720 (24mo @$30/mo)
Total: $920
iPhone 8GB: $400
2 years data service: $480 (24mo @$30/mo)
total: $880
The simple fact is that ALL of the smartphones have a true retail cost of around $400-500. The difference is whether the cost is subsidized on the front end (giving the customer a service credit) or the back end (lower service costs.) Personally, I'd rather pay more up front and pay less over the term of the contract, but all most people see is the "out the door" price, and they fall victim to "free fever", where the free item actually costs more than the expensive item in the long run.
Re: 06/11/08: "iPod? iPhone? uTwit."
Not sure if your math is correct sir, my data plan for my iphone is $20 not $30. That is one of the reasons I got it, it has a cheaper data plan than the other smart phones like the blackberry and such. looking at your math again I think you just made the mistake of putting $30 not $20 your total is for $20 which would be correct.TomXP411 wrote:Actually, even a 8GB first gen iPhone costs less than a $200 Shadow (at least on AT&T):Arc Orion wrote:Wrench, you haven't been reading the thread, have you? The only price plans I recall seeing for data thus far, from AT&T:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone- ... iPhone.jsp
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone- ... iPhone.jsp
- Add a Consumer Data Plan for iPhone 3G to a qualified voice plan for $30 per month.
- Add an Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone 3G to a qualified voice plan for $45 per month.

Man, I hope we get some plans like that when the iPhone comes out here. I don't want to be forced to pay $80 a month for credit I won't even use

Either way, there are still more practical ways of combining MP3, internet and phone than heading out for an iPhone just because it's the newest thing. My husband's a technophile and I've never understood why some people are attracted to the newest and shiniest just because it's, well, new and shiny.

Re: 06/11/08: "iPod? iPhone? uTwit."
If you've been reading this thread you'd know that it's not just because it's new and shiny but because it has all of the features that Greg wants. If you can find a better way to get all of those features in a phone that is less then please share. People keep saying there are better and cheaper ways to do it but I have yet to see anyone provide any sort of evidence, which is incredibly annoying. This is coming from someone that doesn't even want an iPhone.
