Re: Democratic National Convention 2008
I don't think the speech was "historic." It was good, but there have been great speeches by other great presidents. The circumstances surrounding the speech (first black man to accept a major party's nomination) are definitely historic. Further, CS22, I don't think he'll be a footnote if he doesn't win. It's still major progress, win or lose.

Without looking it up, do you know who the 1984 Democrat Vice Presidential Nominee was?ShahinVahdat wrote:Further, CS22, I don't think he'll be a footnote if he doesn't win. It's still major progress, win or lose.

Sorry Arc, other presidential candidates.
Yes, it was Ferraro. Just b/c we don't talk about her everyday makes her a footnote? It was still a historic move for our country. And I would argue the same for Obama's candidacy, win or lose.

I would argue she's a footnote because most people haven't heard of or remember her. I'd say the same of Martin van Buren and a few other US Presidents as well.

Alright, whatever. Not the biggest issue in the world.
Anyway, opinions on the DNC now that it's finished? I think the Clintons did what they had to do in terms of getting their former supporters behind Obama, and that Obama's speech went pretty well.

Well, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion (thank you, godzilla), barring some sort of October Surprise or great big cock-up.Arc Orion wrote:You make it sound like he's already won!ShahinVahdat wrote:It was good, but there have been great speeches by other great presidents.

Re: Democratic National Convention 2008
Is it really? To me it's a continued frustration that people are looking past his actual platform, when he deigns to reveal tiny tidbits of specifics here and there, and instead pat each other on the backs because he's half black. What about all the other black candidates running the Democratic primaries before, candidates with far more experience and knowledge, candidates with actual accomplishments under their belt? No, they were overlooked for the distressingly white and ineffectual John Kerry, most recently. Nice job on that one. I'll smile when the Republicans are the first to elect a woman to the white house, and I'll smile even more when they're the first to elect a woman as president, and I'll jump for joy when a third party gets a legitimate foothold in the American political system.ShahinVahdat wrote:I don't think he'll be a footnote if he doesn't win. PS Choosing between Barack and Hillary is just freaking painful to begin with, but in the end I'll be happy if we never see another Bush nor another Clinton in the white house. And while I don't think Barack is a good candidate for president, at least he's not as hard on the eyes and the ears as someone like Hillary or Pelosi. I guess that's another thing that's good about Palin: she's not shrill, and it appears you might actually be able to see her without a thick blanket of make-up caked on her face. Though McCain's not really the best-looking dude in the world, either, but at least he's not that bad.

That's in the other thread.
PS Please drop the silly-ass "godzilla" bullshit. We know you don't believe in God. It's a figure of speech.
The fact that you think this is a foregone conclusion is evidence of either ignorance or delusion.StruckingFuggle wrote:Well, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion (thank you, godzilla), barring some sort of October Surprise or great big cock-up.

Where? All I saw was you being a hard-assed douche who was shit spouting about people not looking at Obama's platform, his inexperience, and other things that are not his platform. I have seen nothing that you have said about McCain's platform.

It's not, and I don't believe it to be. As I said, "pretty much". It's not certain, and the Democrats can certainly fuck it up like they did in '04, but if the course stays ... it's their election to lose.Deacon wrote:The fact that you think this is a foregone conclusion is evidence of either ignorance or delusion.

Obviously, Deacon likes and is voting for McCain because he's not Obama. :pTower wrote:Where? You have data to back this up? I certainly believe (just an opinion here, and not necessarily one based on fact) Obama's got the odds on his side, but I definitely wouldn't claim that it's a forgone conclusion he will win.StruckingFuggle wrote:It's not, and I don't believe it to be. It is a figure of speech. Use it properly. You sound like an idiot when you get it wrong! Now make like a leaf and get outta here!

Fugs, in my line of work we've got a saying: "that's why they play the games." I know you're not one for sports, but I think you'd be better off to think of politics in this same light.StruckingFuggle wrote:It's not, and I don't believe it to be. As I said, "pretty much".
