Attorney General Mukasey collapses during speech

Word is just now hitting the wires that Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed while delivering a speech tonight to the Federalist Society in Washington. No details have been released as yet, but a tape shows his speech slowing, his head dropping, and then his collapse to the floor. Some people who were watching said he also started shaking before collapsing, and that they feared that he had suffered a stroke.

The latest word is that he was taken to a hospital, and hadn't yet regained consciousness.

The DOJ has released a statement that Mukasey is "conscious, conversant and alert" at George Washington University Hospital, and is being held overnight for observation.

So what about the manufactured scandal about attorneys who serve at the president's whim being fired? It was reported as though it were some unusual or criminal thing, but eventually the foaming-at-the-mouth Bush haters eventually moved on to whatever else they could whip up against him before it was pointed out that Clinton did the same exact thing to something like 250 attorneys to Bush's 80, and nobody really made a peep about it. Either way, it has shit-all to do with the fact that names like Janet Reno and John Ashcroft stick out while even people who generally keep up with current events would've been hard-pressed to name the current attorney general and wouldn't have been able to pick Gonzales as the current AG's predecessor.

Gonzales was in the news pretty regularly, whereas Mukasey has kept a fairly low profile.

There's a YouTube video that shows what happened. He started slurring his words, then repeated the phrase "as a result" several times before going silent and getting unsteady on his feet. Some people gathered around him and helped lower him to the floor of the stage, calling for a doctor.
