Would the family and loved ones of this person that died know they died from you pushing the button? Or would it be one of those died of a mysterious illness thing?

I don't think I'd have any qualms. The odds are good that whoever carked it would be an idiot and therefore I hate them anyway.

I think I would love to do it, but I honestly don't think I could. Yeah, it's a million bucks...but it's also for a life. If I could manage to convince myself to push the button, I don't think I could spend the money. I'd constantly be thinking "someone died for this. Not just died, but I killed them."

I am dismayed by the number of people here who would commit murder if they didn't have to face any consequences.

Push the button to kill a random person and get paid a million dollars? Likely not.

Push the button and pay a million dollars to kill a specific person? Well, that's a whole new question...

That pretty much sums up much of the Internet, I think.

And let me just add, if it were just some random person I didn't know who'd die, I wouldn't still do it. These kind of paradox tales tend to end up having that person face some kind of retribution regardless of whether it was promised they wouldn't receive any sort of negative consequence from the action. (And mostly because if you did push the button you would end up wondering who did you end up killing. Unless you're insane and can't tell the difference between right or wrong.)

Yes. Such as, do we get to choose that person?

I don't believe that quite a lot of them would, given the actual opportunity.
But in fairness I would then have to say that my own refusal is equally theoretical.

If we got to choose the person, I would probably push it quite a few times for the money or not!

I do not. There are plenty of people I don't like, but nobody I'd wish dead.

Terr, if you think random people dropping that you don't know is bad, consider how many people there are out there who would certainly commit murder if they didn't have to face any consequences. As in, killing people right in front of them with their own hands. You'd go from dismayed to a dead faint.

The latter doesn't diminish the former, merely puts in perspective how truly wretched we, humanity, are.
