22/01/09 Don't get it

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

His comment is now the most recommended for that article.

Greg's post?
It has been marked inappropriate by the NPR people and blanked out. But not the seconds, thirds, fourth, bad influence, or fifth.

See? Confusing acronyms ENRAGE people, including the moderators at NPR! You may as well be dropping f-bombs!

Wow, long time no post for me. Awesome, Greg! You've been modded down by NPR!

I heard this report on the radio this morning and I thought to myself, "Thanks, Captain Obvious!"

To see in RLC, I just about died....well stated!

I get that condensing "too long; didn't read" is funny based on what it's saying, but I'm sick of people using obscure acronyms without initial clarification. It just makes the internet even more frustrating and annoying, and It ts&idli&his.
Except that tl;dr is well established. Just because you're oblivious to it doesn't mean nobody's heard of this before. This is like say that MST3k isn't funny because you miss some of their references.

For the people who don't get the job, here's a better explanation:

It's commentary about the future of media/consumer interaction. As even major news outlets attempt to become "interactive" to increase consumer use, implementing blogs (insert shudder here), txt-ur-vote campaigns, and user comment and debate fields, the not-so-pretty face of the average person is going to become visible, IE lowest common denominator. Essentially, most people out there don't have their oppinion broadcast to the masses for a good reason, and now this is changing. Do you really want to see what your thirteen year old neighbor has to say about international politics? Etc. Or, if you've read Ender's Game, think of it as a realistic impletation of the "nets".

The end result is either 4chan everywhere. Or overly moderated discussion by pompous basement dwelling nerds - which I consider to be a worse fate.

TL;DR you don't want to know, see or hear what the average person thinks. That's why we never put them on the news in the first place. Unless it was Cops.

Maybe it's because Greg engaged in what some people refer to as trolling. :)

Except it's not seemingly all that obvious, at least within the set of people who would benefit from the news.

Also, Mav, most every time you actually post content, it rocks.

Ben's right - this is, technically, HIS joke. He was surprised to find that you could comment on a number of news stories. We worked up this plan to "internet" a big long, important news story. :)

That's not why MST3K isn't funny. It's not funny cuz it's stupid. :)

On a serious note: I've been noticing an increasingly alarming trend: At first, netspeak (which started well before the Internet was popular; we used it on single-line BBS's back in the stone age) was shorthand. Slow typists used it as a quick way to get their thoughts out without the frustration of typing the whole word.

Now, unfortunately, some people can't seem to ever say "you're" or "your", and instead just throw "ur" in everywhere. There are times when you hit a forum or comments section and can't even read it because of the incredible lack of legibility... and it's not just "ur" and "tl;dr", but people who can't get "your" and "you're" right.

I thought that the Internet was supposed to expand human knowledge; instead, it seems to be simply making it easier for lazy morons to spread their stupidity.

And yeah, Greg... That article was about as "no duh" as it gets. I'm glad NPR is sticking to hard news instead of writing fluff pieces about... oh frak. nm.
