Apr. 30th, 2009 - Beam me up Tchotchke

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Put another way: I never really used to know who Joss Whedon was, but when Firefly came out and I was told that it was by the guy who did "Buffy", I had EXTREMELY low expectations. I did not care for Buffy, and then Firefly turned out to be awesome. Then Dollhouse came out, and we watched it out of loyalty, though it never really grabbed me, and we've since fallen out of interest. So even though you may have hated something JJ's done in the past, to discount all his work based on it seems kinda silly. Especially when he's been the head of a few really, really good projects.

FUCK YEAH!

Abrams has done quite a few things. Forever Young, Armageddon, Joy Ride, Mission Impossible 3, Alias, Fringe...come to think of it, I don't really like much Abrams has done.

I got to see an advanced screening of Star Trek this past Thursday. Aside from an over use of lens flare effects it was AWESOME. The cast. The acting. The effect. The relationships between the characters.

It was a completely successful reboot as far as I'm concerned. I really hope that there will be a second film. I want to see more of Simon Pegg's scotty, Karl Urban's McCoy and Zachary Quinto's Spock.

Is Kirk as insufferable in the movie as he is in the trailers, or does the full film give him some redeeming qualities?

I love how the new Kirk got completely over looked in the naming above. Shouldn't he have been the best and biggest person to be named for being amazing in this production?

I am going to see this movie next monday, But I can only hope it is as good as some people seem to think.

Alias had an okay premise, but Sydney was far too stupid for words. "Hey, I'll tell my fiance I'm a spy even though I know it could get him killed." "Oh my god, why did they kill him!?" Lost is confusing as all hell, and every time I've tried to watch it I haven't had a clue what's going on, even with the aid of Wikipedia. He was one of the writers of Armageddon, which makes zero sense scientifically. Cloverfield was nothing special, and I can't stand the shaky-cam style, even though I know it's exactly what he was going for.

That said, I'm perfectly willing to go into this movie with an open mind. The awesome trailers are kinda helping with that.

I ma not saying he is bad
i am sure people likes whats he does I am just saying i have hated all of his movies so far and shows. I just like things to make seance, I have Seen Lost didn't get past season 1, Cloverfield Were did not like the shakycam and would like to have seen the monster fully, Mission: Impossible III just didn't like this one, Armageddon Needs more SCIENCE!

Now after saying that i will probably end up seeing the film but not on opening day as i had planed to before i saw who's doing it just going to wait for reviews of rely people not critics thought I do like most of the cast he picked.

No no, the question is: Is Kirk as insufferable in the movie as he is in TOS, or does the film give him some redeeming qualities?

Eh, I think the first problem I have is that I'm so attached to the old series that I am afraid I have become *gasp* a purist! The first Star Trek movies were so awesome that the idea of someone mucking about with it seems like sacrilege to me.

Let's also not forget that not only are we coming off a VERY bad Star Trek movie, and a VERY bad Star Trek series (one where they went back and time and reinvented things at that), but the other movies/series that have been "reinvented" after several years. Star Wars anyone? I'm very afraid that this will turn out to be another Phantom Menace. Remember, that looked awesome but turned out to be two hours of dog poo forcibly fed to us though our eyes.

Bah. That's nonsense. Phantom Menace was a decent movie. It isn't Lucas' fault that everyone expected it to be mostly lightsaber and space battles like the others. (Although, I will admit - WTF with "midichlorians"?)

Oh god, I'm so tired I started a post regarding how CS22 was a troll and how bad Phantom Menace was.

Finals, they will be over soon.

The space battle in Nemesis was ALL it had! Yes, it was well done (like someone in the studio had finally figured, "Hey, I'll bet these ships can actually maneuver!"), but it was hardly worth the rest of the movie.
It just goes to show that you shouldn't kneel down, grab the third rail with both hands, and piss on it from three feet away.
