10.19.2009 - Pixels!

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

I've always wanted to try crochet. Is it an expensive hobby? Easy to learn?

AFAIK all you need is a crochet hook and some wool. The hook should be cheap and I don't think wool is terribly horrendous in price these days. T'internet will teach you how to actually crochet.

Hehe. Welcome back to the dark side Liz.

I told Mike last night I need to learn to crochet and knit and he called me old. I reminded him that when I make him things he thinks they are cool. He replied, "Yes, but that doesn't mean I don't think it is an old person hobby."

tnitnetny, just tell him that a number of actresses spend their down time on set knitting. Knitting makes you hip!

Surely this depends on the actresses?

*giggle* *snort*

It depends on the colorway, the type of wool, the actual yarn content, superwash vs untreated, the company, etc. Wool, it's an obsession that grows and devours your soul.

That said, I highly suggest Ravelry for any crocheters and knitters. It keeps things organized, it has the best searchable pattern database to currently exist anywhere on the internet, and it's free for use. Oh, and Mario Blanket.

i have to second the ravelry suggestion, i don't think i would have even tried learning to knit without it. i have always been a crocheter. and i don't think i would have stuck with crocheting as long as i have...

there are even groups about learning to spin and dye yarn on ravelry.

Before this derails,

I genuinely laughed at this one. Thanks, Greg.

In Comic-Greg's defense, NES small mario is only 13x16 pixels. >_>

That's 208 squares. It's quite a lot for someone who is basically new.

Crochet

Post by meeshxsmith » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:32 pm

I'm pretty new to crochet and found ravelery through an online search. I found on there a real cute pattern for a Totoro and my husband much like Gregg demanded that I make it. I gave in and Totoro is about half way done :)

Good luck with your crocheting Liz! It is very theraputic!

If we were just doing small Mario... that would be easy. I'm doing raccoon Mario from 3, and he's going to end up being about 750 squares and I'm only about 50 finished. Although 50 isn't so bad when you think that I started this back up on late Thursday evening and we decided to start making this Friday evening.

I think I'm going to do a few side projects too... you know, to keep me from going insane.
