I would actually argue that recycling glass would be a no-brainer. Making glass involves a certain amount of glass scrap ANYWAY, so it would follow that you merely needed to throw the broken glass bits in the furnace, and bada-bing. Done.

Actually we were able to cap the twist-off bottles when we made our last batch. It was more difficult to cap, but it can be done.teddy wrote:Empty's aren't worth shit in the US (Minnesota you don't count), bars here are full of the 'clink' sound as another bottle is tossed in the garbage.
Also I feel I must do my duty as an internet whore and point out that a shiner bottle is ill suited for home-brew as it's a twist off, making capping much more expensive.

When creating new glass, only a small portion can be recycled glass anyway, and different types and compositions of glass can be more or less recyclable, depending. I don't think there's a shortage of recycled glass material.Greg Dean wrote:I would actually argue that recycling glass would be a no-brainer. And even so, glass is one of those things we will NEVER run out of. A shortage of Silica? You think that will EVER happen?Deacon wrote:When creating new glass, only a small portion can be recycled glass anyway, and different types and compositions of glass can be more or less recyclable, depending. Reusing, Amp. It's been established that it's more environmentally friendly.

*dusts off his forum account and coughs* On a sort of unrelated, and yet... related note. I thought todays comic was really well done! It felt very old school, having charm similar to The Muffin.

This is exactly the difference in recycling between USA and Canada. In Canada, bottles get cleaned and reused in the form they are already in. In the USA, bottles almost always get melted down or ground into powder to be made into a new product, which takes more energy. Apparently Coca-Cola and Pepsi seem to think it is a better idea to melt down old bottles and form the melted glass into brand-new bottles than it is to sterilize and re-fill old ones. I can't for the life of me imagine that melting them down is cheaper, so WHY are the American beverage companies spending money that they could pocket instead? Is there some kind of Food and Drug Administration regulation that says that they can't re-use the bottles for health reasons?atreno wrote:Alright, so as a student in Environmental Science todays strip left me feeling kinda miffed, and I decided to do some research.
1. I've found out that Americans don't have the same bottle policies that Canada does when it comes to recycling. We wash and reuse beer bottles, and the Beer Store gives us back our deposit blah blah blah (This was mentioned by some one else in this thread). I still think that Dave should recycle the bottle anyway.

Re: 2/1/10 - Motivated to recycle
they use to reuse bottles down here for soda. Now they put soda in plastic bottles because its sturdy and light. Beer, on the other hand, is still in glass because it is better for the beer. Who wants to drink beer out of a plastic bottle anyway?
They have started to sell a few glass bottled sodas again, but they don't have the distrabution set up for picking up, shipping off, and cleaning the bottles... I wonder if it really was more cost effective to just make brand new ones, and if so why?

Penn has said in interviews that the last ever episode of Bullshit is going to be about any and all bullshit they've gotten away with on their show. LMFAO They'd have to know ahead of time that they're going into their last season though, but I hope it happens.Greg Dean wrote:And furthermore, why is it that entertainers cannot be seen as sharing the truth as well? They are debunkers, and while yes, their goal is to make an entertaining show, they're pretty open about who and what they feature. The results more or less speak for themselves.
I'd argue that people on legitimate "news" organizations are just as biased and "truthful" as Penn & Teller, and that says a fucking LOT. At least P&T are honest about the fact that they've GOT an agenda.
Having said that, I think their episode on recycling is dead on. No gimmicks or editing cheats in that one.

Atreno,
Discrepancy: That 'ISLAND TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS' is less dense than styrofoam. I'd also like you to point out how something placed in a landfill would wind up in the middle of the Pacific. Eh. I'll just point to this as an example of how much of an 'island' it is.
Anything where a company won't pay you to give to them isn't worth recycling. Aluminum was paying well before any mandates by governments.

As usual in the US, it depends on which tax jurisdiction you live in.Arrakis wrote:Are empties not worth anything in the States? In Canada they pay us to return them, usually 10-20 cents, depending where you are... Usually, party hosts can get 5-10 bucks by returning empties.

Also, even were it dense enough to be seen, it would require quite a bit more plastic to create an actual 'island'. All the plastic currently on the planet wouldn't be enough to create an 'island twice the size of texas' - and then it would just float away on the current, and sink whenever you stand on it.adciv wrote:Atreno,
