02-16-2010 - TPB and so on

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

I've always liked your mom!

I'm sorry. That was way out of line.

I just noticed something.
Yesterdays comic there was just a poster on the wall.

today the miller sign is there, the pepsi sign is there, there is a map of some sort and a bigger poster on the wall.

Someone call Dan Brown, quick, Remolay just found the plot for his next book. :p

Actually, does anyone have suggestions for good bit sites? I've used TPB a few times, but its hard downloading things, since the number of seeders and whatever is low.

My guess would be he finished unpacking the assorted boxes sitting behind him, and decided to relocate the "I'm with CoCo" poster.

And not once did anyone wonder, "Isn't downloading from a piracy website for items that may have viruses attached to it seem rather risky and/or illegal?"

Fascinating.

we're geeks, do you think we care?

I certainly don't find it risky, although you can never be to careful

Yeah, seriously... that's what the little "trusted" icons are for.

Have you NEVER torrented anything before, Amp?

I think the old TPB crew has moved on. For example, Peter Sunde is currently one of the people launching Flattr (which is a fantastic idea, in my opinion...).

for another bit site, check out ISO Hunt, granted they did get sued but they are still operating for now. also Greg do bear in mind that M$ is supposed to have some kind of anti-counterfeiting crap sent out to all Win7 machines some time this month, voluntary for now of course. http://nexus404.com/Blog/2010/02/12/mic ... y-hackers/

Though for me I just copied my friends Win7 ultimate x64 disk and used a cracker for it... oh wait I shouldn't have said that.

Yeah.. I've been using GNU/Linux since 2006. Last year, I swore I would never help anyone with a Windows installation again. It's so much hassle compared to a Ubuntu install.

Really? Have you tried installing Win7 on a computer? It's a quick, painless install and nearly all the drivers are picked up right away. I've installed it on several computers and the only drivers I've had issues with are for ATI graphics cards, but it was easy enough to just grab the latest drivers from their site.

Yeah, 7 is generally the easier install, especially if you have finicky hardware that lacks excellent support in Linux. I run Ubuntu as my main OS with Windows 7 and XP VirtualBox VMs for any apps that require windows and I'd have to say getting all my hardware running in Ubuntu wasn't exactly cake. Nothing too extravagant but certainly not as easy as installing a new driver in windows. It's getting better but still not for the average computer user.

Ubuntu is wonderfully easy to install - as long as you're using reasonably common hardware. I cannot run Ubuntu on my laptop. The wi-fi card is this obscure Atheros model, and none of the kludge drivers available work reliably with it - and the ones that do work at all require a fair bit of tinkering to get setup. I can assure you that most users don't consider compiling and integrating drivers easier than clicking through an installer or two. I note, of course, that the majority of hardware configurations will work with minimal configuration.

For that matter, if people would hold onto the restore/driver discs they get with most of their computers, most any major manufacturer has its own driver install tool that will walk through everything. It's not a difficult process. I personally go out to get the newest (or best, if that differs) version of each individual driver for my computers, but that's not really required.

I've thought about installing Linux on my other computer, but Ima scaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaared, lol. Though that's mostly do to the fact that I know nothing about Linux except its free, very popular and was created by a Finn.
