Rant/Rave: Worked an extra 1.5 hours yesterday (on my birthday) and an extra 2 hours today. That brings my total number of hours at work 19 hours over 2 days. Crazy! One of the other pastry chefs was sick on Wednesday and was rear-ended yesterday on her way home, so I will most likely be doing some overtime tomorrow as well. Thankfully I really like my job. My boss has also been giving me free lunch as a thank you!

My buddy went to Barrow, Alaska on TDY. Somehow, it qualifies as the northernmost city in the US, despite not having any roads connecting to other population centers. The closest interstate is only one Alaskan Airlines flight away - and only if that flight leaves the state and lands in CONUS.

First and foremost, obviously:

Obligatory 'hurr hurr'.

Also:

You work in a kitchen? Isn't it pretty much as read that the staff get fed?

Rave: Got paid on Thursday.
Rant: Was gone by Friday.

We get a 50% discount on things made in house, and 10% on things we bring in (pantry items, etc). I work in a small bakery that makes baked goods and take home dinners and such. We get paid for our lunch breaks (1 hour which is almost unheard of in my industry) so as long as you spend less on lunch than you make in an hour, it all kind of evens out.

Edit: There is some staff food, old food, stuff that doesnt look right or gets overcooked, things that fall on the floor or get dropped on a counter.

Rave: My boss made me a giant sandwich today as a second thank you!

Sounds like your boss is trying to fatten you up. Are you part German, perchance?

Rant: This week just keeps getting longer and longer. Ten hour days before overtime, and the kitchen's starting to get pretty hot.

Rave: This weekend through Tuesday, Chef Michael Smith is running some dinner functions out of our hotel. My job for the next few days basically consists of running around and getting stuff for him(since I know where everything is), helping him with whatever he's doing, and just kinda watching what he's up to.

It's going to be an interesting weekend. I think we're making the white chocolate/avocado mousse he made on Iron Chef on Tuesday. Today was apple cider braised pork belly.

Fun fun!

And enormous. The waist-line on his pants is just below shoulder level on me.

Rave: My uncle's wedding is over, for me at least. It was fun but it was entirely too stressful.

Rant: I had no alcohol, so I have no fucking reason to feel as emotional as I do right now. Gr.
