Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

I grew up playing 3e, so..... oh, damn, this makes me feel so young. I can legally drink! There - balance restored.

Anyway, 4e didn't seem like that much of a jump to me. Although, I don't really play all that much anymore - I relied on borrowed rulebooks and moved away from the group I played with.

If it makes you feel any better, my first D&D Session was four weeks ago.

I came into dnd a few months before the 3.5 books were released. I've played just 3e dnd since then, mostly as a DM. I've run a few short games, a few long games, I've messed around a lot with house rules and custom content. I've discovered a variant (gestalt) that is a lot more fun. I've gone from the player who just picks stuff because it sounds fun and sounds good, to a player who builds a good character, while also having fun with mechanical exercises, to DM, to "oh now face this unholy amalgam creature I statted up yesterday", to "oh, you want to do that? Okay, here, let me build you a PrC for it". 3/4 of the fun for me is in the storytelling, 1/4 is playing with it mechanically, either using the tools to build new things, or building new tools. I view it as a mechanical toy as much as a game to be played with other people.

Just recently, Bandersnatch's been trying to get me into 4e, but truth be told, I have no enthusiasm for the system. I have a hard time approaching it as a different system (as I would Exalted, Shadowrun, Paranoia, CoC, or any other different game), instead of just looking at as a comparison to 3e and finding it mostly coming up short. Or that I miss some of the stuff they took out.

I mean, I like a few things. Healing surges. The way so many more people have abilities that force movement in combat. The way everyone has something to do that also lets them move. The latter two especially.

The rest ... meh.

But I also recognize that I am minority opinion in my archaic preferences, and that 3e had many potential flaws that took work or ignorance to avert, that 4e doesn't have (but I don't like the patch fixes).

Greg, I'm rather curious of your findings on it.

Confession: I have never played D&D. This is because I have never had any friends that would play it with me.

Same here. I once tried to DM a game of Advanced Fighting Fantasy, but no-one else at the table could quite take it seriously.
