Low-level radiation may help prevent cancer, according to some studies. (Warning: highly technical PDF) Radiation is used to treat some cancers, and keeps the earth's core from cooling and grinding to a halt. Nearly all food is slightly radioactive, merely due to the natural radioactivity of certain elements. Merely from food, each individual gets an average of 0.4 mSv a year, which makes up about 10% of the average yearly dose from all sources, natural or man-made.
Interestingly enough, bananas (and other similarly radioactive food) are radioactive enough to be picked up by customs scanners looking for smuggled nuclear material.
