Really Nasty Monitor Problem

Post by Idiot'sPride » Sun May 18, 2003 3:40 pm

Well, due to my lack of a GPA slot (I think that's what it's called, I'm really bad with computers ^_^; ), I headed off to PCs for Everyone yesterday to get a new case and a new motherboard. My computer was absolutley fine before. My monitor worked, everything was fine. The motherboard is, well, new, and it looks absolutley fine. But now, my monitor can't get the signal from the computer. I tried 2 dfferent monitors, but neither worked. They just stayed blank and gave me a yellow light. Any help is great.
Case:Enermax 3171 Black / No power supply
Motherboard: Intel D845GEBV2L MB v/a/1

Thanks.

Erm... No power supply? Then how exactly does the computer function?

Aside from that oddity, when you press the power button, does the power LED come on? If it does, then the motherboard probably has power. What you'll need to do is reseat everything -- memory, add-in cards, cables, and especially the CPU.

Also, I highly recommend getting a PC speaker for your system. Separate from the main speakers, it sits inside and will beep if the motherboard is able to run its Power-On Self Test (POST). You can use the pattern of beeps produced to diagnose problems.

I'm using the power supply I already had. But aside from that: The power LED does indeed come on. I'll look for a POST thingy as well, but I'd really like to try and fix this without spending more money. So, erm, stupid question: How would one go about resetting all of the stuff? I can't get anything to show up on the monitor, so how could I give commands and such? Thanks for the help, and for any answer you may give me.

I said "reseating", not "resetting". You need to remove and reinstall each component and make sure it fits snugly into its location. I recommend starting with only the case wires, power connection, CPU, video card, and one memory chip installed. No IDE or floppy cables should be connected; this will give you an absolute minimum number of things to troubleshoot.

Reseating: Done
Problem: Not solved

All I can really think of is that my CPU cooling system failed and it fried. Are there any other things anyone can think of that I may be able to fix this with?

Maybe your new motherboard doesen't support your monitor?

You really should buy a PC speaker. You can get them for only a few dollars at most computer stores. They're invaluable in diagnosis.

Could this be a case of ESD? Maybe something got fried.

Skorpion: I I doubt that highly, and, as I said, I tried several monitors.
Martin: Alright, I checked my case, and there's already a speaker there. However, the motheroard has no pin out for it.
MacArthur: That's what I'm considering. I'm going to try and figure out if hat's the problem. If so, I can just get the stuff replaced and all will be well ^_^

Thanks to everyone who posted.

Alright, I looked up the board, and there is a speaker mounted on it. If you're not getting POST codes, then it's not even getting that far in the boot process.

Assuming you have the basic connections in place (Power-On, Reset, and power LED; power from power supply; CPU; RAM; and video card), start by removing the video card and seeing if you get a POST code. If not, then reinstall the video card and remove the RAM. If that doesn't result in anything, remove and reseat the CPU. Be sure to press down firmly (but not with too much pressure) to ensure the pins are properly seated. Repower and see if you get anything. If after all this, it doesn't work, I'd consider exchanging it for a new board from the store.

Martin, don't POST codes come on without any assistance from any of the other parts? I think they activate as long as the motherboard has power, which leads me to believe maybe his powersource isn't at the right voltage for his motherboard/processor and other drives.

Yay, it's finally fixed ^_^ There was a problem with the pin out stuff. But, well, now my hard drive broke. Oh yay. Gotta grab me one on monday. Thanks to everyone that helped.

TSO: If there's an electrical short, which can be caused by a mis-seated CPU, it may not go off. I've had a few motherboards show that (lack of) response. *Usually* that's the only mis-seat that will cause that.
