Don't they have access to a time machine?
Take the keg back in time a year, stash it somewhere safe, come back to the present and pick it up.

As a fellow home brewer, Yes your friends can see the passion as a disease. As for me I haven't the patience for making mead. It takes an incredible amout of time to be done even halfway well. Honey clouds a batch of anything, and straight honey takes even longer to clarify. So I will stick with Beer and cider, though I would love to have a barrel to try aging my brews in.

Late to the party...but they could also just use Tony's Time Dilation device on the mead. Then they wouldn't even have to worry about finding somewhere to hide the barrel that their past selves wouldn't find.
