As soon as I was accepted to a college which will remain nameless (Texas A&M,) which was around november, I got an e-mail account there. Needless to say, it was superior to hotmail, so I used it.

Well, wouldn't you know it, they promptly sold my addy to advertisers. I love it when my Spam has an air of authority.

"Dear Students/Faculty,

The university has been in contact with smartersmile.com to provide
all students and faculty with a discount on custom fitted teeth
whitening kits. This special is available on a limited basis to
students/faculty of the university for the next week only.*"

*And anyone else who will buy our crap

"we are offering students and faculty
a special deal on products to help get you in shape!.
This is an exclusive offer to the university which will
last until March 15th. Do you need an energy boost?
Can't wake up for class? Need to shed a few pounds before
SPRING BREAK?"

But are these e-mails from an address outside of Texas A&M's e-mail addresses? If not, then they are merely being the middle ground between spam advertisers and you, and that is bearable ... since they don't really give away your address.

I thought soliciting to College students via any campus facilities was illegal.

I'm at Cal Poly Pomona, and I recieved the exact email a while ago. It was from an outside address, leading me to believe it got through our filters. And I have to say, I'm impressed with the IT people here. It's the 3rd spam letter I have recieved after 2 years of school.

I use my school E-mail all the time, mainly because the firewall put in place by the ultra-paranoid network admins does a good job of removing viruses.
