Also, every now and then you can have runs where you say "if this months donations equals amount X then I'll make X for everyone" which would give people more incentive to donate
Real Life Support Group Idea
I was going to suggest something similar to spoon, which was can people give you a donation (say $5) and specify they want prize X and get that? Perhaps a way to set it up would be creating a PHP script which hides the picture. That way you can give it to everyone in the RLSG and also give it to people in the future
Also, every now and then you can have runs where you say "if this months donations equals amount X then I'll make X for everyone" which would give people more incentive to donate
Just an idea
BTW: What made you decide to switch to this instead of just giving bonuses to everyone? Was the "Not Hungry, Just Broke" campaign not faring too well?
Simple finances.
Greg's not rich. He's not in a job that provides him with a lot of income (just a lot of free time). And distribution of the rewards costs money. As it stands right now, a small portion of the RLSG dues may go to the forums because of a bandwidth jump. We have 20GB per month allowed right now, and we're on track to hit that around June 25, leaving five days with more bandwidth needed.
In addition, Greg has an appearance at a con (I forget which one, as I don't track them all that closely) at which he'll have a booth with T-shirts and such. Travel, hotel, and booth rental all cost some serious cash, even when you go in with others on it.
Besides, last I checked, it was something like $10 for a deck of Magic cards, most of them Commons. This is $5 for a deck equivalent, and all Rares.

None of which you can use in any offical tournaments of games with people who don't allow fake cards or who have no idea what RL comics is. Also, you cannot sell these cards to anyone except Real Life fans if you decide to rid yourself of them. (unnecessary, what with the .pdf and all) but still...Besides, last I checked, it was something like $10 for a deck of Magic cards, most of them Commons. Bottom line, people, if you don't want to participate, don't whine about it and ask for something for nothing. If you don't like the charge, don't pay it. It is not like you are not going to be allowed to read the comic if you don't pay. Sheesh.
Buncha whiners! GROW UP! Vote with your dollar, this is not the damned Jerry Springer show!
*sigh* One thing I cannot stand is whining. Just my pet peeve. And in this topic I hear more whining about "but! I want to be in but I don't want to pay money!" crap is realllllllly irritating.

I don't care who's right, who's wrong, or what you meant to say. Only thing I care about is the Truth. If you have it, good, share it. If not, find it. If you want to argue, do it with someone else.
Re: Real Life Support Group Idea
Personally I like how it's set up at the moment. The freedom to choose whether I want the gift each month is good. Fair enough automization would be a good idea, but it's not much work to pay each month, two or three clicks max. I probably wouldn't make use of the yearly subscription, due to the freedom thing, and the idea of a longer subscription to things like this is usually that it costs less, but to be honest I'd feel rude paying less than $5/mth.
I'm just glad I have the opportunity to get some cool Real Life related stuff for such an insanely low price.

I'm also curious to see what future bonuses are. The magic cards are obviously a big hit, but what will he do in the future? I was thinking he could [Edit- everyone thought it was a dumb idea]. But then what? He could draw bonus comics, but I think fewer people are going to pay 5 bucks just for a bonus strip.

Hey...wait a minute...I'm not crazy!!!
I don't see what the problem with this set up is.
If you don't like what the bonus is for month X is, you don't donate that month. If you like what the bonus is, you donate. This is exactly what Penny-Arcade does (except they don't have any set $ value) and I've had absolutely no qualms about donating ($5 per month in fact) for a while now.
As far as the suggestion that Greg make FF music files be a bonus for next month, that's laughable. First off, it would be rather on the illegal side. Secondly, if you can't find the files (in many different formats) online, might I suggest you try using Google?
I believe that the idea of these bonuses are that it is something that Greg creates, that only people who subscribe for that month get. I don't want music files that I already have, or could get easily enough. I do want a picture of Cloud, drawn by Greg (hint, hint), for example.
Just my $0.02, take it for what its worth, standard disclaimers apply, no offense meant to anyone.

RGB, if you arent willing to pay $5 a month (which could probably be accumulated just by checking the couch cusions for that month) than dont donate. Its as simple as that. But DO NOT sit there and complain because people that are willing to donate get stuff that you dont.
Also I have a question for Greg: Say if someone were to have limited access to only a 56k over the summer, however had more than enough bandwidth the rest of the year. Would this person be able to donate the $5 during the summer months, however collect the reward for the donation at a later date?

Geez, these are open forums! I am merely voicing my ideas. I was expecting to find kinder people here, not a bunch of flamers. Shame on you all.
And BTW...I gave 10$ last month, not expecting anything in return, just because I liked the comic.
...Well, since everyone in the world and their brother is against my idea, I guess I'll just resign from this thread.
Rgb9000 out.

Then you don't have any more reason not to donate.

I still have yet to receive a pic Greg said he would do for donating 30 bucks for the last con he went to.... some time last year. But I agree with most people here. Don't complain about something that wasn't previously offered before. Be happy he has taken the time out to do the things he has done. I think it’s a wonderful idea that supports the reallife comic and community. It might even help to pay for better bandwidth for the reallife server***hint***hint***.
