Apple once again has the fastest consumer computer available
Apple once again has the fastest consumer computer available
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5
1GHz frontside bus
512K L2 cache/processor
512MB DDR400 128-bit SDRAM
Expandable to 8GB SDRAM
160GB Serial ATA
SuperDrive
Three PCI-X Slots
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
64MB DDR video memory
56K internal modem
The WWDC held true to everyone's exceptions and more. Not only did Apple use the highly atticipated 64-bit IBM 970 processor, but released it at 2Ghz, 200mhz more than most people expected. Along with the 3 new PowerMacs (1.6,1.8,2.0) Apple announced Panther, the new version of OSX which utilizes the new IBM 970. Also a new iChat was announced with iSight, an Apple webcam, which will make video conferencing integration fully functional. Everything announced will be released in August. Disappointingly no PowerBook upgrades were present at the WWDC, but it's ineviable that they will be released.

Other than sounding like an advertisement, I would like to point out the following for IBM-compatible machines:
Doesn't look to be the fastest on the block to me. Just fastest Apple.

Other than sounding like an advertisement, I would like to point out the following for IBM-compatible machines:
http://www.enterpriseitplanet.com/netwo ... hp/2226111Intel's Pentium P4 just got a speed boost up to 3.2 GHz. The new desktop processor supports an 800 MHz system bus and features hyperthreading, a technology drawn from the company's line of server chips. Hyperthreading allows a single processor to simultaneously execute multiple processes when matched with an OS that supports multithreading.
Built using 0.13-micron technology, the 3.2 GHz P4 has 512K L2 cache and can accommodate 400, 533 and 800 MHz FSB speeds. Its successor, the 90-nanometer "Prescott" chip is expected to ship later this year.
The chipmaker says that the new P4 is ideal for businesses that require the added computing muscle in multitasking environments, particularly in the fields of financial analysis and engineering design. The 3.2 GHz processor posted speeds that were up to three times faster than typical 1 GHz machines in SYSmark 2002 benchmarks (SPECint_base2000 score: 1221 and SPECfp_base2000 score: 1252).
These performance gains are especially noticeable in processor intensive, content creation programs such as Adobe AfterEffects and 3d StudioMax, according to Intel.
The chip's data-crunching prowess also extends to multimedia duties. In one example, a PC equipped with a 3.2 GHz P4 can transfer one minute of digital video to the MPEG 4 format while converting 26 minutes of music to MP3 four times faster than a 1 GHz Pentium III.
Intel's 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 is priced at $637 in quantities of 1,000 and is available now.
Doesn't look to be the fastest on the block to me. Just fastest Apple.
I don't care who's right, who's wrong, or what you meant to say. Only thing I care about is the Truth. If you have it, good, share it. If not, find it. If you want to argue, do it with someone else.
Fixer: clock rate != actual performance. The 970 is a nice chip, but better than i386.
That said there are some non-i386 systems that would beat this one, Also i386 and x86-64 can easily be gotten with quad CPUs.
The fact that the processor is 64 bit really means very little for most applications, other that allowing you to put large amount of memory in it.

up to 8 gig of RAM... ummm... but that isn't the important part. The important part is that it looks pretty!
really big picture
Edit: Made the URL a it friendlier to the thread.

i don't even think its possible to fit all that much ram onto the system board, unless you're running paralell computing, but I don't know the limits and stuff of the mac. except the part that it likes to crash different.
I worked on macs for about 5 years, from 4th grade to 9th, and i didn't like it. also, that crash different link is to a wmv movie which is quite funny.

Yay. Look, they put a GRILL on the G5.. so it really is like Honda Rice... sporting a custom grill, annoying glowing neon-ish effects, and the fact that it thinks it's actually badazz when it's not, and it's just like a Cavalier sporting altezzas runnin' up and down main street challenging Z06 Vettes. Funny, stupid Apple.

even if hte opteron wasnt shipping, 64 bit systems have been around a /long/ time. Point is 64bit PC. I could Linux on many archs a PC, but they mean windows Vs mac, and I dont think windows 64 is out yet, and even if it was it would not be much use on a PC... but that's another rant.

IIRC, the only OSes ready for an x86-ish architecture are a handful of Linux distros. Bruce is right, though -- 64-bit has been around a long time. IIRC, the Alpha is a 64-bit architecture, though I'm not at all sure what's happened to it since the HP-Compaq merger. Is the SPARC also 64-bit? Seems to me it is.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

I need a DEC Alpha CPU... One of the old pre-Compaq-purchase units, just to say I have one.
There's an interesting analysis here that suggests that Apple seriously cheated on their benchmarks, including not using SSE2 (which uses double-precision floating-point operations) when running SPECMark on the P4, disabling Hyperthreading on the P4s in the multiple-CPU test, using a special high-speed library on the G5 while not using it on the P4, and possibly tweaking CPU registers in ways normal users cannot.
The flame-mail is fun to read, too.
