My computer freezes about 5 mins after windows finishes load

Post by BattlePlague » Thu Jul 10, 2003 8:38 pm

a couple months ago my computer had to get its processor replaced. then it worked fine up until today. last nite there was a thunder storm so i turned it off and it was off for 12 hours longest it has been in awhile. also it has a battery powered surge protector. when i went to turn it on this mourning after about 2.5 min(at the user selection screen) or longer if i log in windows XP it freezes every single time. scan disk works fine. i tried to use the restore disk that came with it on the computer and it gets an error that it cant load some stuff and that it cant find a file named ghost and that its unable to restore the computer also it shows a symtac logo in the background(similar to my virus scanner update software should i try to uninstall sysmtac?) i cant virus scan it becauses it freezes before it finishes and i cant backup my files because it freezes before it finishes. every time it freezes i have to do a forced boot to turn it restart it. last nite i did not delete anything or changed any settings all i did yesterday was download and install neocron and play it for hours and virus scanned it with norton anti virus corprated edition which was fully updated and scan disked it and a week ago it was drefragged.

i hope i didnt end up with another faulty proccessor or that something else broke.

later tonight im going to call support!

Id appreciate any and all help!

If it was a faulty processor, you wouldn't have made it 3 minutes in. I'm inclined to think that you should check the connections of everything (unplug your computer first!) in your computer, clean out the dust, and take another whack at it. These are basic steps, but rather necessary before you can go into the maintenance process.

From experience, I am inclined to believe this is a software, not a hardware issue. A friend of mine encountered the same problem with Win XP twice due to not shutting down properly.
i tried to use the restore disk that came with it on the computer and it gets an error that it cant load some stuff and that it cant find a file named ghost and that its unable to restore the computer
Is it possible to post exactly what error message you are getting and the exact name of the file? Perhaps that will help.

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and seeing if it stays up any longer?

heres the errors when trying to restore also theres a symantec logo at the bottom?

Error #1 singel user version cannot do multiple loads

Error #2 cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT

Error #3 application error 11000: invalid dump file if the problem persists please call support.

when i turned it off before it messed up i turned it off without any problems only have to force it to turn off(by holing in the power putton) when it crashes or freezes this is the first time a active program did not cause it to crash

Edit: theres nothing stuck anywhere that i can see

also when it ejects the cd when it cant finish it ejects it from the my cdr which cant recognize any cds????

also also me and my friends computer upon start to the desktop gets a WJVIEW Error! saying cant excute main and this has been going on for a moth now dont think it involved but it might be.

As your starting up, hold down F8.

Try "Most Recent Configurations that worked" from the startup window you get when you hold down F8.

The image which you used to restore it may be corrupt. I've seen this happen when making images from within the OS to be used for the image. It sounds like you have either a corrupt installation or you have a cooling problem on your CPU.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

freezing cool right now
Your processor could still be overheating even if the room temperature is down low. This may be a really silly question, but is the fan on top of your processor working properly (i.e. spinning)? Even if your case fan is working it is possible your processor fan is slagged.

Also, do you know how to get into your BIOS (for some computers its F1 on bootup)? Some BIOSs support temp monitors and will tell you your processor temp.

What proccessor do you have? If It's a AMD Duron I had a problem close to that, it'd overheat in a few minutes (Was at a LAN Party at the time) and it'd do it's security shutdown, so It may be proccessor safty function or you might just need to take your HDD to a friends house and reformat it :-)
