Have you tried a light bulb? (laughs at the people who don't get the joke).

Ummm... there are a million things that could be causing things to go nuts. The first thing to check would deffinately be the processor fan.

The only similar problem I ever had was with my laptop. I'd turn it on and it would start loading programs then just lock up before I could even do anything. Turns out I didn't have enough free HD space to get it to start up... how I managed that I'll never know.

MY hardware is not damaged in any way.

I got a new install cd from the company.
The same errors, happens probally because of a failed uninstall of norton. since symantec(the norton update program or something like that) shows up when it should not.
i tried manulaly removing the files but its still partly there.

Is thier a way to wipe my hard drive and then use my windows restore cd or something close to that?

Assuming you don't have any data to back up, the Windows installation CD will allow you to format the drive, removing everything.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

If it's a common restore CD, it will automatically reformat your hard drive while also installing apps that shipped with the computer.

yea but when it just about to start reformatting and installing it looks in the R: for files that sounds luike norton files and i never had a R: and when it ejects the cd it ejects it from my broken cdr but the cd is in the cd rom that i installed.

should i remove my cdr drive? it does read cds anyway.

Obviously seeing as you're such an expert that you can proclaim this with a straight face, you don't need our help figuring out your problem.

Don't assume your hardware isn't at fault here. Like people have said, it could be your temps causing the CPU to issue a shutdown instruction and windows just isn't dealing very well with it. Just after it hangs, reboot and go into the BIOS and check what your temperatures are then report them here.

It could also be dodgy RAM causing this - if you have more than one stick, try only using one of them. Then if it still occurs, swap that one for one of the others. If it still happens after that it's unlikely to be RAM.

It could be video card drivers - upgrade to the latest version.

It could be something you've got running at startup - go into msconfig (or whatever) and disable as much of the crap that's in there as possible.

Got to go to work now, but all that should give you something to think about.

Have the BIOS perform a memory check. It almost sounds like something is conflicting in memory and causing a shutdown. If the CPU fan is working, and the case is open, the problem shouldn't be the CPU overloading. Try ripping out everything Symantec, given the errors you describe all revolve around that software. It might be attempting direct memory addressing which would crash some operating systems.

ok i think i fixed the crashing for no reason problem(needed new ram)

ive looked in BIOS and i dont see a temp monitor anywhere in thier.

my video cards have the latest version its as up to date as possible.

now it seems to freeze only during heavy cpu usage when playing the newest games before it froze no matter what

Also is thier a way to delete a file that is supposedly being used by the system at the moment without ending the process that is using it(ive closed as many processess as possible and my comp wont let me delete that file and i know its not a system file)

Create a system recovery disk. Boot to a non-graphical interface and see if you can hunt down and delete the file manually.

Failing that, boot in safe mode and try deleting it.

What is the name of the file? It may be something that is not obviously needed, but still protected by Windows File Protection, and as such could turn back up.

I think what may have happened is the thunder storm turned your computer off while it had part of a file in ram that was needed for something in windows to work....
I really need a new sig....

This is from experience: My boss's computer was slow as ass after a thunderstorm, even the boot. after the hard drive was changed (we have tonnes) it worked fine, even sped up the boot. I'd check your hard disk if you still have a problem (i thought you said you fixed it with the new ram?)

also, i'd like to note

"norton anti virus corprated edition"

what the hell are you running that for on a home machine? Have you been wearing the pacifier and waving the Face and Rattles flag of kazaa? Silly Goose!
hahaha i don't come to these forums anymore :x

If it's NAV CE, it must be warezed. No way that was purchased by a home user. Go spend a few dollars on NAV2003 like you're supposed to.

Not sure how I missed that the first time I read it.

i got that from my work i used it with my home network.

dont have it now since i had to return the cd.

also i got windows restore to work. after i removed my broken cdr drive which was somehow messing up the restore process. I guess it was because of it being the master drive and when i removed it worked.

After it finished restoring i got a major boost in my downloads speeds.(probally some spy or ad ware that adaware could not detect)!

Is it possible to unoverclock my comp? somewhere here (cant find it now) someone said that amd athlons xp comes overclocked? maybe i heard it somewhere else?

also i stopped using kazaa awhile ago for 2 reasons 2 slow and 2 many fake or infected files.

thx for the help
