My dad didn't know this until I told him... neither did my brother... nor several of my previous students. I had to learn the hard way that not everyone is as computer literate as I am. For some, its not natural. How could you NOT know this?
Forward disclaimer: I mean no offense.
Case in point:
Where I work, one of my co-workers was struggling to help one of our managers fix some basic computer problems... very mundane stuff... running Defrag, starting programs, doing anti-virus checks etc. My co-worker was getting very frustrated for having to hold this guy's hand through everything.
The next day, he ran into major car trouble. (You have to know the nature of my place of business, but everyone except the computer guys are car experts.) So my manager (the guy who couldn't use a computer very well) spent about 4 hours total on the phone patiently walking my friend through some very difficult car repairs. This guy was asking the same "n00b" questions my manager was, just about cars instead of computers. My friend confided in me that he learned a powerful lesson that day.
Whenever I am struggling to teach a student the bare basics of programming (they can't understand variable instantiation or what void main() means... frustrates me to no end), I always think back to my days in calculus when my tutor had to hold my hand through everything. We've all been n00bs at some point... most of us our n00bs at something right now. It's a perspective that I try to hold whenever I am doing anything.
I by no means mean any disrespect toward you at all MB. I mean, you're the commander in chief of these forums and I have great respect for you. However, I did want to say that I was a little uncomfortable with the comment.
It's an error that I've made in the past and I don't like seeing others make the same mistake.

No offense taken. It's just that there hasn't been a shipping operating system now in about seven years (Windows 3.1x continued shipping about a year after Win95 was released) that hasn't required a shutdown process of some kind, and even Windows 3.x required that the user exit to DOS before powering off the computer to prevent trouble. That takes us to a decade of shutting down Windows in a manner other than simply powering off.
Believe me -- I've had a great deal of experience walking people through the simplest of things. This happens often in Fortune 500 corporations. However, it's been a VERY long time since I've seen someone who didn't know to use the shutdown process at the end of a Windows session.

If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

I remember my old Atari 800 and my tape drives. And my grandfather's old TRS-80. We, the aged.

I don't care who's right, who's wrong, or what you meant to say. Only thing I care about is the Truth. If you have it, good, share it. If not, find it. If you want to argue, do it with someone else.
