my computer is 100% l33t... (56k warning)

Post by dedfrogz » Wed Jul 16, 2003 2:55 am

well i've had this setup for about a month, but since i'm new here i figured i'd be all sweet and show off...

ok i got an ic7-g and 2.4c. along with 512 pc3200 hyperx.

well the highest stable fsb i could get was 283mhz!!!!!

i had to bump the vcore up from 1.525 to 1.600 for it to be stable. but it barely increased my temps...

well here's some benchmarks...

PC Mark 2002 and thats with single channel ram, i''ll have a second stick for dual channel ram in about a week or two...

3dmark 2001se broke 17k without oc'ing my 9700pro AT ALL!!!!

i tired running 3dmark2003, but it said there was a missing dll file or something... its useless anyways...

Though I must say that your hardware is impressive, but no computer can be truly l33t running windows, simply because it doesn't have a very good memory management system for the kernel, and it has truly large security holes. Now if you were to run some other OS on it(Linux, freeBSD. and so on) you'd get a huge leap in system performance.

First of All Ryuu most people that over clock do it for gaming, Secound Both Linux and freeBSD have there own problems. And theres a thing called being on more computers makes it a larger target.

Yeah my first thought has already been answered: Its still windows. If you put some effort into usabiltiy, did something nice with the interface or such I find that much more rewarding that counting cpu cycles.

"*billf chuckles and then hugs his gig of RAM, 19" Monitor and dual 1.6G processors."

like i said, i'm getting a second stick of 512 hyperx pc3200 with a week or two...

as for the monitor, i'm currently using a 17 viewsonic but will be selling it to a friend and buying either a 19 or 21 inch...

and dual processors would do absolutely nothing for me...

although my pc is seeing dual cpu's due to hyperthreading...

Alright first off over clocking can be used for alot more than gaming. I personnaly am going to over clock my own system once I'm finished optimizing everything. And Linux is a perfectly good gaming platform, in fact there are quite a few linux natives of popular games(UT 2003, UT, and so on). And for all those games that don't have linux natives, I just use wine(I've had a good deal of sucess with that and it's getting better).

And of course Calus you're 100% correct, but there is no such thing as perfect. No operating system, program or anything for that matter is perfect simply because human beings aren't perfect. But Linux is the better OS simply, because of the nature of the way it's made. It's source code has crossed the globe and be contributed to by thousands of programmers. Bugs get fixed very quickly and security is really tight. Microsoft has the nasty habit of releasing bug ridden programs, that can easily crash the entire computer simply, because the kernel is unable to manage the memory properly. I don't say things bad about windows because it's an easy target, but rather I say them because of my experience with it.

Windows would have been a good OS if it were totally rewritten, but simply the way it's set up is terrible. Windows contains alot of old code that is highly ineffcient and left over from the days of 3.1. Linus Torvalds makes sure that the Linux kernel contains no legacy code, even if it means Linus himself has to rewrite huge portions of the kernel code.

Basicly Linux won me over by simply being better. I used to be a windows user, but I got tired of reformats, crashes and viruses. Linux doesn't have viruses(well two that I know of but those were jokes and since only root user can append executables it can't infect anything unless you let it). Linux programs do crash, but that's a rare occurance even when you try to make them crash. And reformats aren't needed.

At anyrate I'm not a hippy or anything as the like. I'm just a person who got tired of unreliable systems.

Ohh and cheese! ^_^

All OSes have their place in life. I dont want my CEO's of the company I work for doing email and syncing palms to a linux box. Nor do I want my coders running a windows box. My graphic designers and web boxes are nicely ran in IRIX. And Macs.....well Macs are there to make all the other OSes look good. Point is, dont knock anothers OS because you dont like to use it, or you think it sucks. If it works for them, then why waste the time to try and convince them otherwise. Myself, I run Windows XP, IRIX, and a kinda hacked out Windows2k box, running a Linux shell instead of Explorer, Mozilla, and Cygwin Bash shell. As well as a 4th box running a normal Windows2k install.

And overclocking is used by more than just gamers, I know people that do it just to say that they did it. I used to overclock when I was doing 3D graphic design on an old pentium way back in the day.

Yes, I thought it added a touch of humor in. I havent used macs in forever. So Im not sure their strong point, though I hear they tear it up in the 2d design area.

Your computer would be alot more '1337' if you got rid of the FF8 background.
