Hunting poll
So I was sitting down eating a deer steak tonight and I thought about the morality of eating dead animals, and/or killing them with guns and/or bows and arrows.
Is it right to shoot animals with guns?
Is it right to breed animals for the sole purpose of eating them?
Is it right to eat meat at all?
I didn't feel guilty about eating the deer, any more than I would about eating a normal steak. It wasn't I who killed the deer, it was my sister... with a car... on accident. So I thought I was paying the deer respect by not letting him go to waste. You know?
But then I thought, what if my sister had run over a person? Would I have eaten him, too? Certainly not. Although I'm sure his steaks would've been tasty, it's just not culturally acceptable to do such things. Because if humans ate other humans, why then we would just have one more reason to kill each other, wouldn't we?
Ow, now I'm getting a slight pain in my stomach. Revenge of the deer!
Anyway, let me know how you feel about hunting.

While i don't hunt, I'm with Doc. I don't see any point in hunting for sport, as it just seems pointlessly cruel, imho. Hunting for food is no worse than what animals themselves do, so I don't see anything wrong with it.

Most of lith's family grew up in Alaska, and lith actually does like caribou, as her uncle sends her some, and some Copper River King Red Salmon every year (lith just HAD to rub that in!!!), lith isn't against hunting.
Lith sides with Doc in saying that animals get killed for food. Get over it.
But people shouldn't just kill them for sport, like my cat Thor does. (Though lith is under the opinion that any bird that let's itself get killed by a fat, lazy house cat deserves what it had coming)

Yes. Guns are a relatively quick and painless death. Is it right to shoot animals with guns?
Yes. They have a good, if rather short life.Is it right to breed animals for the sole purpose of eating them?
Definetly. Meat is good for you. If we weren't meant to eat it, it wouldn't be so tasty. Is it right to eat meat at all?
However, killing wild animals for food should be kept to a minimum. They don't breed fast enough, and it upsets the balance of things.

The Incisors are the teeth in the very front. They're the sharpest teeth, built to cut food and shaped to shovel the food inward.
The Canine teeth are in the corners of your mouth. Because they're meant for grasping and tearing food, they have very long roots.
And most Dentist say there sole purpose is for MEATS and only MEAT eaters have them.

Re: Hunting poll
I don't think anyone's going to be surprised that layla has... *drum roll* ...AN OPINION!
I believe strongly that all animals should be respected equally and I see no difference between hurting a human and hurting any other sort of animal that feels pain. It doesn't hurt less when a deer is shot than when a human is shot and many different species mourn their families and fear for their lives in the same ways as we do.
However, I eat meat because I see that the majority of people do not see things this way and the few of us that do are not going to change anything by refusing to eat it.
I also feel that arguments such as "it's natural" are not only unproved claims, but very senseless. I could equally argue that it was natural for me to kill any sexual competition or someone who didn't get along with the pack. Where did the idea come from that if something is natural then it must be right?
I also find it worth pointing out that I'm quite in awe of how healthy vegetarians I've known are. Perfect skin, white eyes and never getting sick. Methinks it's karma.

Actually, the natural way of dealing with sexual competition is to drive it off, which people also do.
There's also some recent research that suggests that fish do not feel pain in the sense that mammals and reptiles seem to; thir brains don't seem to be wired for it, though it's possible that they sense pain in another fashion.
One point on the vegetarians... How many of them also exercise?

That's true, most vegetarians I know do other things to stay healthy as well. Though I say, if it is natural, why not do it. You have to consider the fact that that's the way it was before and we never had any real problems, except the buffalo, but that was a bunch of people being stupid. I say hunting is fine as long as it is controlled so as not to wipe out an entire species. I seriosuly doubt me killing like a rabbit and a squirrel every other week is going to wipe them out.

What we need to do is institute social darwinism around here. It seems natural to me, especially if it is also done for food. After all, it's not like the human race is in danger of extinction. Quite the opposite really. I'll even get it started.

I don't understand... either you believe in killing animals for food, or you don't. The fact that "it won't make a difference" doesn't change the act of eating animals.
It's like the story of the man throwing starfishes back into the ocean, who said, "It made a difference for that one."
With that said, I'm going to continue eating meat and hoping that the animals die as quick and painlessly as possible. If eating meat is wrong, then I don't wanna be right.
