They do that to get your DNA spoon! They're building an army of clones to rule the world!!! ARGHH!
Out of curiosity, what's everyone take on prebuilts from companies such as Alienware or Falcon Northwest?
They are a gigantic rip off. My friend just bought an Alienware PC a few weeks ago. $3,000, just so they can put an alien head badge on the case and their logo on an optical mouse. It is really a waste of money when you could buy a computer that is much better for half the price.
If you have the money, and you don't have any experience with computer assembly, then go for it.
I dig Falcon NW because they use high quality car paint for their cases, which result in a very nice effect.
Once again, if you have the money, go for it, but I will personally stick to building my own computers.

Hmmmm I love building computers, so I wouldnt think otherwise... if I were to go for a prebuilt I'd probably go for falcon NW. As for cooling, I currently have 8 fans in my computer and a 92mm fan on my monitor, so everything stays pretty cool
As for Hewlett compaqard, I would definatly stay away from those. the cases are horribly small and they use the bare minimum of fans and CPU cooler (which means a cheap 80mm in the front, the CPU fan, and the PSU fan..)
I really need a new sig....

My view on Alienware, etc. is that you're paying for piece of mind. Yes, you could get the parts and throw together the machine for far less, but if you're not used to building machines, you can get bugs and quirks. Nevertheless, I generally shy away from prebuilts. Far more cost-effective and fun to build at home.
My friend's machine runs around 70-80 Celcius without the case. It crashes often. I think I might buy him a cooling system for his birthday, because that's ridiculous. =P

uhg, let me just state that I hate Tigerdirect. http://www.newegg.com has quite a nice selection, good prices, and good service. But have actually found that when it comes to things like keyboards, mice and Monitors you are better off going to http://www.Amazon.com, they have large stocks and constant sales, plus if you are in NY ordering a monitor from CA the shipping cost is going to kill you, Amazon has warehouses all over the place which are likely to be able to cut your shipping costs by quite a bit.
a few other sites that have good prices and selection are http://www.4sure.com, http://www.insight.com, and http://www.allstarshop.com

http://www.pricewatch.com - is just awesome
http://www.resellerratings.com - good to do some background checking on a company
http://www.newegg.com - overall excellent ratings from above site
And as farr as prebuilt, they are great for clueless people. Dell has a complete machine for 499 that is a nice little item fo those that can't do their own support.
2.2ghz p4
128mb 266mhz ram
onboard vid & sound
cd rewriter
NIC & dialup modem
monitor, speakers, KB, mouse
*4 years service and support*
Sure, it's underpowered for gaming and other high end apps, but for an average joe that needs a magic email box, that's a great deal. That 4 year support is damned impressive. Before you say, well I can support a computer just as good as Dell, let me build your comp for you, I have 2 things to say.
1 - Not likely, since they can readily send techs out, ship new parts etc etc etc
2 - If you've ever done tech support, you really really would rather have someone else support the stupid thing instead of wasting your time.

Try http://www.pricegrabber.com instead -- it has built-in ratings (though not as comprehensive as Reseller Ratings) and a far superior search engine.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.
