The plug is not the problem, but good suggestion.

Another one of my die-hard gamer friends suggested that my CPU might be faulty or overheating. I considered the idea, but my fan doesn't seem to be showing any problems. I'm nearly tempted to just purchase myself a new computer.

How big is your page file and how much HD space do you have free?

I've installed MBM5 and all my sensors check out fine.

hd space available: 28785MB, paging file size: 768 - 1536. The paging file size is currently set to "custom size". Should I set this feature to "system managed size" instead?

I don't believe thats going to do much of anything for you, I just wanted to check and make sure you weren't running ridiculously low on HD space or using a really tiny or non-existant page file.

Is it possible that this random crashing could be caused by the way I re-install WinXP? The way I do it is by booting up my computer with the WinXP installation CD already in the CD drive. I go through the process of installation by deleting any extra partitions I have on my HD and repartition the HD by something regarding NTSC (?).

Sorry for my lack of knowledge regarding this subject, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to save myself from purchasing a new computer. Thx again for everyone who's trying to help.

No, that's the recommended way of doing it. The file system you're using is NTFS, which is what you should be using.

The important error codes I saw were 0x1000008E and 0xC0000005 (may be shown without the 0x prefix). If it happens again, look for those, and it will likely be the same problem.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

I realized that I also failed to installed the WinXP service pack 1. I installed it this morning and I'll definitely report if my computer continues to crash and post the error codes.

update: Sadly.. even with a clean format and SP1 installed, I managed to crash while playing CS. Even more sadly, I forgot to disable the automatic reboot. Looks like I'll have to force my crash again to double check those error codes. I'm beginning to believe that the problem involves my video card drivers.

I can confirm that the same problem has happened. I recieved the error code 0xC00000050 just a few minutes ago.

Jasonr, un-check the auto reboot like Martin said, since I did that, I haven't had a single random rebooting.

I've already done that. The reason why Martin told me to uncheck the auto-reboot was so that I'll be able to identify the error code the next time I crash.

Ummmm, scrap that last message. Instead of simply rebooting, it gives me a big blue screen. I'm screwed either way

Could hardware problems be a cause of my blue screens of death?

When I was trying to use a PSX emulator after i upgraded my ram it would BSOD. After I took the ram out it would run solid as a rock. you might try a different stick of memory, or perhaps if you have more than 1 try 1 stick at a time and see if that helps.
I really need a new sig....

I agree. At this point, RAM is the most likely problem point. Swap the RAM out for a day or three and see what happens.
