FTP Mac?

Post by The Fey » Sat Jul 26, 2003 5:46 am

I'm trying to help someone (a new hostee) be able to use FTP and whatnot. The problem is, she has a Mac and I have no clue how to use those as I have Windows.

I'm assuming that merely putting in ftp://blahblah into the address bar does not work on Macs. (it doesn't seem to work for her)

So, she downloads the FTP program Fetch and follows the directions given in the tutorial. (http://support.mia.net/HTML/support/tut ... chtut.html)

But something is wrong and she is unable to do use it. No FTP for her.

I think maybe I did something wrong when I created the subdomain and user account.

Help?

fey: your ftp://blahblah is correct. she is incorrect.

have you tried logging into her account yourself? I mean, if you did something wrong with the subdomain, it would be obvious, the only problem you'd have that you couldn't catch by logging in yourself, would be if your router was blocking her requests.
hahaha i don't come to these forums anymore :x

What OS is she running? OS X handles FTP in a different fashion than pre-os x systems. It would be helpful to know.

rather than trying to connect through the subdomain, try through the regular way, I presume without the subdomain it would be something like ftp://ftp.blah.moo/~mommy or something like that
Fetch should work, I havent had any problems with fetch. As for the built in FTP, its a little wonky, it will let you connect and download but not upload (atleast I cant find a way to do it) and terminal is more of a pain to do it that way.

Yeah, I figured out my problem. Apparently, I was doing something wrong. Something about putting the correct ending to something or something... *shrugs* Lesson learned, I guess.

yeah. well, apparently 'the fey' had found the problem right after my post. most problems can be checked for on the same pc, but some cannot. always try the 'can i do it from here' test. THEN you check and see why outside sources can't do it.

A handful of FTP programs are picky about adding the trailing / on a URL like an FTP login. Technically, a URL like http://www.reallifeforums.com (or an associated ftp address) is malformed, as the proper address is http://reallifeforums.com/ although most programs will compensate for this. That may be what she's talking about.

...

similar to how some websites, like my schools, or there.com, require the www or else you dont get a page?

Seriously.

http://there.com
http://www.there.com

notice the difference.

And http://www.reallifeforums.com works for me.

No, that's a DNS issue.

On a nameserver, an entry is made with a domain name, like reallifeforums.com. It will have entries in it for various items, mostly what are known as A records. Generally speaking, an entry is made with the domain name pointing to the IP address. A reference, called a CNAME, is then made for http://www.reallifeforums.com pointing to the original entry. This simplifies things because a change in the original A record will be reflected in any referenced entries, which can include ftp, mail, smtp, or whatever in addition to www.

Some nameservers do not use this format, and have the domain and the subdomains entered separately, or not at all. This is why you can sometimes go to a domain without a www, and it will be different or not exist at all.

i'd just suggest against using the built-in FTP in OSX until panther (supposedly, apple fixed whatever was wrong). install YAFC (if your friend is comfortable with a command line). you can get it on fink
