True patriotism is not a flag on a street, or a slogan yelled in spring. It is something graver, sacred and indominable. It is love of home, not love of government.

Indeed. Love of a big land with big lakes where I can burn off $500 in big pyrotechnic displays whenever I damn well feel like it.

Ok, so technically, I can't, but I've never been stopped. :P

Ya know whats funny? Theyre not called French Fries because they were invented in France (they weren't) theyre called French Fries because the method of slicing them and cooking them is known as "Frenching" so the whole thing is a moot point.

I agree with Severus. Nor is it also patriotic to bash another country in such a crude way, just because "they" have a different opinion.

Furre said,
"Patriotism is the belief that your country is superior to all others by virtue of you being born in it."
Whoever said this I must disagree with. Of course, without a better definition of patriotism myself, perhaps I shouldn't.
To blindly believe that your own country is always right, for whatever reason, is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Countries are run by people, people make mistakes, therefore countries will make mistakes. Whether the country has the gusto to apologize and make reparations for it's mistakes is whether or not that country should be taken seriously. The United States have not been apologizing nor have they been making reparations when we screw something up, and for that many countries have a low opinion of us. Many of the countries who think highly of us do so because we give them money, supplies, protection or political favors. This is something I'm quite familiar with because I do, on a much smaller scale, exactly what the US does. Unlike the US Government, however, I make it a point of fixing my mistakes and apologizing for them. These two simple actions would go a long way towards fixing foreign public images of the US.

Well, I never call them French Fries, or Liberty Fries, or Greasy sticks of cardboard fries, just fries. If, somehow, people don't know what those are, I berate them for incompetence.

no offense or anything, but i have hated the french since LONG before their whole anti-american ways. this latest thing just adds more to it.

P.S. even though it was the french Leadership that is being anti american( and from what i have gathered most french people were FOR america) i still hate french people. not so much for the people yet all the less i dislike the commonpeople, the more i dislike their leadership.

Any specific reason why you might hate them?

Gee, who would have thought that sending your white children off to die fighting other people's brown children was in the best intrests of your nation!
Nick, that was immature, childish, and utterly stupid. It doesn't sodding matter if there are mostly whites, blacks, hispanics, or whatever fighting on America's side. If you don't like it, then do something about it. There just happens to be ____ as majority of people in the army. Big fecking deal. And we're also over there to get Saddam out of office and his illegal weapons destroyed. Whether it's about the oil or not, I'm not going to believe anything until it's confirmed instead of speculated on and assumed. As far as your concerns about genocide, in case you didn't notice, it's a crime-against-humanity. If we didn't care about the fact of it being illegal and we did want to slaughter the Iraqi people (which we're not), we'd nuke the whole country without a care in the world for civilians or innocent people or being put on trial by the UN. But we're not doing that, are we? So next time, watch your mouth about something that's completely untrue unless you have actual evidence instead of being a whiner.

As far as freedom fries goes, here's a little bit of trivia. THEY'RE BELGIAN. Nobody calls them French fries anymore! We just call them fries! We care all of a sudden? That's like all the times we joke about the rednecks in the bible belt, than joining their side in their crusade to keep children to keep children censored, soft, and sheltered from reality (that's a different rant). And how, pray tell, is this going to sway, insult, and degrade the French to join our side? It's as American as apple pie, and really not very helpful. They probably don't even care! They're laughing at us! Also, how is this going to help win the war? Is Saddam going to keel over because a side dish has been given a new name? Will french kissing become freedom kissing? Freedom roast? Freedom tickler? You're not accomplishing anything by it except that you're using less than the usual 10% of the shriveled onion that is your brain. If you hate France, fine. Just don't tell me about it. If you do it to support America, I don't care.

Though the very idea of a freedom tickler does give me the giggles.

Right, everything I ranted about was selfish, stupid, angry, cynical, confusing, and a waste of space. I'm glad I got that out of my system, my apologies to anyone I pissed off/offended/insulted/etc, and I just realised that I'm the one who's making a big deal out of nothing.

I personally have always called them just fries. I think that calling them "freedom fries" is rather stupid, and I don't see why calling them french fries is bad. I guess I don't really care.

As for the war with Iraq, I think that it's stupid and pointless in the long run and will only serve to lower the political power the US with relation to other nations. Unless we do something radically different from what we've done in the past, we'll leave the country in worse shape than when we got there.
