Wireless LAN problems

Post by Chinaman » Mon Jul 28, 2003 10:28 am

I'm having chatting problems with my linksys router I seem to either constantly log on or off on AIM or it really lags, and it does this to me when I play Anarchy Online. I'm wondering if there is anyone that can help me.

what range are you using it on? what are you transmitting through? try to keep the area near the antenas on either end clear. Do you get problems when right next to the AP? what about on ethernet? what wireless NIC are you using?

I'm not using ethernet, just wireless. This is just in my own house. I have the router right next to my computer. I'm using Linksys wireless type B.

Try on the ethernet if you can, that will tell you if its the wireless or the router. Try updating the router's firmware. Do you have another AP/network you can test your NIC on?

Urgh... C'mon, Bruce... Ethernet isn't wired. Wired is wired. Ethernet is a protocol.

One other important question: Are the card and the router from the same manufacturer? Wireless is notorious for equipment from different manufacturers not quite working together.

Martin's right they gotta be compatible, the manual that came with it sohuld list compatible nics but any newer 3com nic should work with a linksys. i would check if anything is blocking it, if the sensors are dirty and check if you comp is setup to use infrared ports in the first place. you may need to install a couple of files for it to work properly. you could also try reinstalling the drivers, i'd stay away from firmware unless you know what your doing, or else you may end up with a new paper weight. try unplugging the power from the router for 5 mins then plugging it back in, sometimes they need a rest so to speak.

grimace, he's using 802.11b -- radio. No IR involved.

Check for firmware for both the router and the card, as well as new drivers.

http://linksys.com/download/

Use the pull-down menu to find your particular hardware and see what's available for it.

Bleh. I run on a wireless Linksys network, and I have the same problems.

Things to check:

1. Is the card in working order?
2. Is the antennae flimsy?
3. Is there anything between you and the hub that might be screwing up the signal? (For me, it seems to be the marble in the bathroom, although I don't really know.)

Move the antennae around a bit if the signal stops coming through. Also, Grimace's suggestion of turning the hub off and then on works well too. Otherwise, find a new place to put your computer.

Problems already been solved, but I'd just like to ad:
Didja ever think that it was just AIM lagging and logging you on and off? I mean it's one of two programs that has killed my computer, and therefore refuse to install it. And I found an alternate to it. God bless Trillian. I also found an alternate to the second program. The RealAlternative at http://www.k-lite.tk make it so I don't have to install realplayer again.
