Making a forum

Post by Cold MidKnight » Sat Aug 02, 2003 2:23 am

I recently got hooked up with a project to create a forum for this group some people are creating (how vague can you go, how vague can you go). Anyway, I'm the only person in the group who has any knowledge of web design, and I'm going to have to make a forum. For starting out it's probably going to be far less elaborate than this one, but as I haven't done it before and I know I'll probably need to learn some javascript, I need help.

Can anybody tell me any resources I could use to work on this project? I have basic knowledge of HTML, but I have only the most rudimentary knowledge of how javascript works. Furthermore, I know I'm probably sitting here to take down a giant. Any books or sites that could help me?

Thanks.

Step 1: Drop the idea of doing it yourself.
Step 2: Find another one that's been done. phpBB, Ikon, Invision... all of these are good, complete forum implementations that you can install in an hour or less, and mod to your heart's content.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

use phpBB its really easy to use and you can easily add hacks to it if you want to.

I think http://www.invisionboard.com/ is a pretty decent PHP based forum as well. check them both out. I found Ikonbaords to be a bit... large? It just isn't as friendly as the others I guess. It had some things I liked about it over the other boards, but i can't for the life of me remember what they were since it has been January or so since I've farked with it.

If all else fails, there's sleezyboards. (http://www.ezboards.com) But if you want customization, go with phpbb, but with only knowledge of HTML, and no JavaScript... You'll be relying mostly on tutorials.

Because it requires no setup on one's own, including finding a host and so forth.

All three of the boards I mentioned have many mods available to them. Invision is probably the best of all of them right now, being similar to phpBB, very full-featured, and with an active development base. phpBB is working on 2.2 right now (you can see the live results of the work change on a daily basis at http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB22/ if you're interested), but that is probably several months from completion.
