Lith's gram has an old iMac, from 1999. Well, as they also have 56k, lith was just going to connect her computer to theirs via eathernet port, and then just surf the web on her computer. MUch easier that way, ne?
Unfortunatly, that didn't seem to work. And yes, lith has done this with other computers, though they always had DSL or T1 lines, not 56k.
Does anyone else know how to do this?
Please?

if it has a nic then turn internet sharing on and use a (damn can't remmember exact name) cross ethernet cable
or you could connect them via null modem cable using serials ports and share the net

Umm...
On a Mac? Eeeek. First off, you can't connect two computers like that, in order to do so, you need a special type of cable called a crossover cable.
Well.. I'm a tad confused...
is it setup like this?

or maybe this?

The first one is closest. There isn't a seperate modem, that lith is aware of. JUst a phone jack.
And, lith does this with her friends mac's, but they turn on their IP address, and find those for lith. So now, lith can plug in, but it keeps trying to block her, and is hiding its IP addy. Anyone know how to find an IP addy on OS 9?

Ok, so the modem is internal...
Hmm... You've got me. I hate macs. What confuses me... is, if your friends have DSL/T1's and you plug into their computer... do they have two places to plug ethernet cables into? I've had nothing but bad luck with Macs. Hence I hate them. Sorry, unless I come upon a miracle. I'm confused.

Friends are probably running OS X, and gram is probably running OS9. Pre-OS X MacOS was not known for its networking prowess.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

That's what I thought, but since my Gentoo/OSx box is OSX, I couldn't confirm it.

yeah there is a few ways of doing it but i'll have to get back to you on the exact method in the software end. but if you want to make it simple ( but a bit more expensive) get Mac OS 10.2

Umm... I can't imagine it's worth that much. I mean Mac OSX =
OS X V10.2 Jaguar (Mac)
Product Number:295690
Brand: Apple $129.97
Not to mention the speed loss the machine would take, then on top of that, some applications won't run correctly in OS x that ran fine in 9.x

Thats only because OS9 is not Unix based while OSX is. Its been totaly rebuilt, so ya OS9 programs dont always work well on OSX. By default OS9 is run through a shell of OSX, which even for me Its been a hit and miss. But you can also change the boot to run into OS9 if you really need to. Most apps I use have both a OS9 and an OSX version nowadays.
And while that $129 pricetag seems steep, if you are upgrading directly from OS9 then the cost is a little more justified (speaking a win updrade is only $20 less retail). I got lucky and only had to pay $20 for my Jaguar upgrade, but 10.2 comes with samba, which OSX 10.1 didnt. So personaly for that I would've bought it anyways without the $20 deal. Of course Jaguar is cheaper for students and I think my friend got it for $59

Either way, then you gotta figure that it's her Gram's computer, not hers. And that she won't be using it everyday, so that just makes the cost more unneccessary.

Yeah, lith's grams doesn't need a new OS. She can barely handle OS 9, and all she really needs to run is her scanner, e-mail, and a word processor. LIth just wants to connect to it so that she can upload her new family portrait (it has the laughman sigal over lith's face, for some odd reason. STupid Law #1), and her new avatar.
