I don't believe I ever brought closure to my own beliefs on the afterlife before, so I'd like to express them now if that is alright.

I've given it a lot of thought and I've sat down and asked myself what I truely believe; there is something greater in ourselves than just "electrochemical impulses telling us we're dieing." The soul does live on, but our afterlife is built around our true nature in life. How you live in life is how you will exist in death. If you adamantly believe that you cease to exist when you die, then you will have no afterlife--your soul will cease to exist. If you were bad most of your life, or never believed in any sort of spirituality but feared it, your afterlife will be spent in a hell, where you will encounter everything you hate and fear about yourself and others. And if you've been content most of your life, and have tried to help people out as much as you could... then you will find yourself in a utopia manifested through everything you loved in life.

I'd also like to add that many people talk about heaven, but no one says anything about interaction between people in heaven. And I thought about this, too. I think each person has their own afterlife--their own world, kind of like a server, I guess I could use as an example. And if you wanted, you could visit a loved one in their afterlife, or a friend, or anyone.

At least that's what I believe. It cannot be proven. It cannot be disputed. It cannot be said as true or false. But it's true to me, and that's what counts.

Glue, I think I'd tend to agree with what you said just there ^^

It seems very much like what I *think* I seem to belive. (I say *think* becuse its been very hard to verbalize my belifes. you seem to have sumerized at least part of them, however)

Sometimes the best way to understand what you are thinking is to tell it to someone.

the 'light at the end of the tunnel' syndrome is caused by the chemicals released during non-instantaneous deaths.

some people can be revived from this stage, thus we have that pseudo-explanation for an afterlife.

I'm not talking about while you are dieing. I'm talking about after you are dead and the electrochemical reactions have ceased.

Well you could always ask The Grim Reaper
You know, since he deals with Death so much.
Being a Christian, I believe that if you follow the basics of the Christian Doctrine, you go to Heaven. despite some people's misconceptions, it's remarkably easy to get saved, but you can all relax, i'm not going to try and convert you.
I think Heaven is a place where you can be close to God, your friends and family, and everybody else who got through the pearly gates. Basically just socializing for eternity, spending all of infinity with those you love, and meeting new folks to love.
Frankly, after a while this might get kind of boring, so i hope God lets us out from time to time to get into really bloody fights with Demons!
That would ROCK.

We'll all find out what happens someday. Let's not worry about it until then, ok?

Sometimes, though, you have to wonder what it's like after you die. I won't take "there's no afterlife" as an answer, simply because it's just too hard for humans to have been created without a greater power. I strongly believe this greater power would give us an afterlife. So, sometimes I say to myself, "Self, a lot of people - especially in ancient cultures without any interaction between each other (the cultures, that is) - come up with the same ideas of 'other worlds.' Maybe that's because it's where we were all from in our last life, if we do pass from lives to lives." So, maybe that's the answer. Or maybe, when we die, we just go to whatever heaven we want. Our own special place that's whereever we want to be. Maybe we want to live again, so we live again - probably not in this world (or plane of existance entirely). About seeing friends or relatives, well, that's a bit complicated, because your spiritual body may not look anything like your physical one. Maybe, if you chose to come back to life, you said "I'm gonna try being tall and brown-haired instead of short and blonde". So I guess you'd have to search for some time to find a friend or relative, although chances are you won't care much about anyone from this world once you're dead, because you've got whatever you want in your heaven. The only real doubt about this, besides proof, is that we can't find a reason for it. Why would some god come along and give us anything we want? Well, that's human nature for you, kids; we don't do anything without a motive. In fact, that's pretty much animal instinct, 'cause there isn't any reason to do something for no reason, right?

Meh. We'll find out. Nobody can deny that.

I never said your statement was unwelcome, sir. I was reiterating the fact that I was referring beyond the activities of the mind during death.

The truth is that there is no death, and thus no after-life. It's all a conspiracy to keep you under THEIR control. Shoot yourself in the head and see if it's not true.

But that doesn't answer the question. What happens once you're dead? You cannot possibly just be.... dead. Right? People believe in reincarnation, life after death, afterlife, Heaven, etc. [/quote]

I don't.

But that's just crazy old cynical atheist me.

Carry on...

Oooohh, ouch. Just because I don't beleive in life after death, that makes me gay. Excellent observation Pete.
