"He didn't lie at all he said the reason why it was removed."

We get it EvilElf. You're an idiot.

That is NOT the reason it was removed. I did not "unintentionally" do anything.

It seems like just a question of semantics to me. Certainly not something to argue and bitch about for days.

"You are an arrogant asshole who can't let a dead subject die."

I let it die. We moved on to why advocating violence against people on the forum is okay and asking for a link to the uncensored racoon.

I don't know why you dragged up fake issues that we clearly explained pages ago.

You did not post a link to objectionable material. Right. I agree with that. But you posted a link that contained objectionable material on it. You did not post it directly, but it was only one or two clicks away, so that does not change anything. If you post a link to an entrance page for a porn site, that doesn't make any different.

"It seems like just a question of semantics to me."

It implies I the links posted in the thread were to grotesque things as though I was attempting to trick people.

Which is a lie.

I don't know what was so far up BillF's butt that he couldn't stick to the correct version he gave in the PM.

"If you post a link to an entrance page for a porn site, that doesn't make any different."

I didn't post to a porn site. And entrances to porn sites contain elicit material from the get go. My site forces nothing objectional on the viewer. You must intentionally click on it.

"but it was only one or two clicks away, so that does not change anything."

It changes everything.

From me intentionally showing people gross things (which BF's public post implies which is a flat out lie) to people stumbling across it themselves at the site. Which is what happened.

May I ask one simple question? What reason would billf have to lie about you? He probably doesn't even know you, or didn't before all this idiocy started.

"May I ask one simple question? What reason would billf have to lie about you?"

Ask Bill why he managed to get it right in the PM but decided to defame me publically.

I don't know. Maybe he thought he didn't have a stong enough case since you have to purposfully click on the gross things to see them. The FTP page is perfectly clean. Pure text and a few colors with a PHP file browser showing what's available.

Maybe he didn't want to have to admit publically that he got fooled by a file named jesus.html

The link in my sig takes exactly one more click to get to jesus.html than a direct link to the FTP.

I had hoped I wouldn't need to do this. Here's the PM conversation between the two of them, just so that everything is out in the open.

billf
Thanks for the info you posted about the annon FTP, but someone has already used it for some pretty nefarious purposes in the Jesus.html file (which I don't suggest clicking on). So it had to be removed.

KalvinB
I'm not sure how it having some "bad" files disqualifies it from being useful for the RealLife community.

I'm aware of the Jesus.html file (same as the Doom4.html file btw). There's some much worse things in the Dear Jesus section of the site. People like the bizzare. That's why I collect it.

I also offer paid hosting as well. Used to be free. Would you expect me to police hosted sites as well and if anyone posted a "questionable" file would that warrent no one being able to use it?

I think you're over reacting. The anonymous FTP is not a big secret and there are many forums who have members who use it regularly. MegaTokyo and GameDev.net being the most famous.

I'd understand if you were against endorsing it as some kind of "official host" like you did with RealLifeHosting (which not surprisingly died considering free don't pay the bills) but it's kind of silly to reject a casual offer.

IcarusIndie.com is probably one of the most famous web-sites running on a 256KBit DSL connection. Which is why I'm moving it to colocation. It's growth is being stunted on the current connection.

Basically, turning down my offer, I don't think is your choice to make. If a user doesn't want to use it because it's "tainted" that should be their decision.

billf
The problem was that you gave a link that dirrectly linked to an image of pornography and something that is intentionally disruptive to a person's computer. Both of these things are frowned upon by the forums. That is the reason I removed the thread.

It was not by any means an overreaction.

KalvinB
It wouldn't have been an overreaction if I had plugged that file.

I didn't. The rules ban that sort of thing. The rules do not ban linking to places that happen to have such things. Direct links are only banned, not indirect links. And it wasn't even an indirect link.

Are you going to ban any mention of Something Awful because it contains graphics which you may not like?

In fact, I didn't even mention anything that was in the anonymous FTP. It was simply a plug for people to use it for their own files.

So yes, you are overreacting. You clicked on the file on your own. I didn't link to it or even mention it. You can't ban something simply because you happen to not like what someone else used it for.

As I said, members of GameDev and MegaTokyo use it quite often.

billf's reason for removing the thread:

"Removed thread "Hosting that's not going anywhere" for what I hope is unintentional linking to some pretty ugly stuff."

Those are copied from what billf sent me. I've checked them against the contents of the database, something I'm loath to do because the PM database should be kept as private as possible, but the text all comes across perfectly fine.

I don't see any contradictions. Maybe the semantics of the wording, but that's it. There was no lying. There was only your ego getting hurt because someone removed something of yours that other people find OK, but which this community defines as inappropriate.

Edit: Corrected spelling of KalvinB's name.
