Animosity in the forums
This is a rant about verbal abuse that I see at least once every day in these forums. It seems there is always someone who needs a good, merciless flaming. I'm not just talking about the odd n00b troll who happens to wander in and spread hate, either. I've even seen regulars post some pretty heavy-handed remarks, and then thought to myself "I can't BELIEVE they just said that! I thought they were cool!" It is a sad thing when members of our community have to resort to vicious name-calling and biting sarcasm to entertain themselves.
We've all seen it, or participated in it at some time or another. These are insults that would never be tolerated or acceptable in real life, and yet in Real Life they are ignored as if the internet somehow magically softens the blow of a few hateful words directed at some poor soul, who may have just had a very bad day and be on the verge of severe depression. You may think your insult was harmless, but it may have ruined that person's day.
I just wish we could all treat each other with respect and laugh WITH a person when they say something foolish, instead of laughing AT them... because we all make mistakes and life is a learning experience, not a competition. I always like to think that this is one of the more mature and civilized forums out there, but every day I hang around I start to question that a little more.
I think it's just a good general rule that we all treat each other with the same respect that we expect ourselves. If you wish to be heard, then hear other people out. If you wish for your opinions to be respected, please don't flame the opinions of others and call them stupid or anything like that; instead, provide a valid counter-argument and try to keep it civil.
This rant isn't directed at any one particular incident or person, or group of persons... and it isn't saying that bitterness and animosity is the norm here. I'm just saying that there is some hatred being expressed and asking everyone to PLEASE PLEASE try to be a bit more gracious with their posts. I'll work on it if you will too. Thanks.

Since I can see it coming, I'm posting this so the first reply isn't a flame.

Yes people that are mean are bad. I mean you can correct people on a mistake nicely. You don't have to go and say something like "You stupid bastard its <insert correct thing here>!" Thats just mean and why do that to someone who is just trying to be helpful to but made a mistake. Everyone makes them just as Shyknight said. We are all not perfect no mater what you may think. We are just human after all.
Just come out and say what's on your mind, Lune. Politely. What sort of man do you take me for?
I never said I disagree or don't with you. My point was that, if I recall a little while ago, you were one of the people that you are saying trolled. I remember many comments by you that were insulting.
I'm not saying I've never done as such, but I am simply saying it is interesting that you are the one who comes out and rants about this sort of thing.

This is a very busy time of year for a lot of people what with school starting up many have to start classes again, and those of us who work have to pick up the slack for all those getting back to school and the added workload of the holiday season fast approaching. This causes a lot of stress and a lot of grumpy people.

Lune, if that is the case, and I don't doubt it, then I'm sorry. I may have to go back and figure out exactly which posts you mean, and apologize to some people.
I have been known to be 'brutally honest' at times, saying things that probably shouldn't be said about people I probably don't understand well enough. Just like a lot of people, I get emotional at times. When I get emotional, weird stuff can happen, like excessive posting, incoherent babbling, and rude comments. Those are the times when I hate myself most; even the very second after I press the submit button I am already regretting it. But sometimes I feel like it's all so hopeless, you know? Ah, crap... I'm gonna go to bed now guys before I get cranky. Peace.

Karma, man. Even if you don't believe in it cosmically (neither do I), it is how humans react to each other. Equitiy and inequity breed each other.

Works both ways.
#1: Sure, I agree that poeple should be mindful of not being an ass
#2: BUT poeple should also be mindfull that, as billf pointed out, its a stressful time for a lot of people and its easier to let slip sarcasm or some less then tactful remark.
So please dont take things so seriously or get offended so easily.
IMO, if you do only one of these two things and not the other you are adding to the problem.
