Netsplit comments

Post by Martin Blank » Wed Sep 10, 2003 5:49 pm

Why is there a constant need on the part of some people to comment on netsplits? I understand if you're new to IRC, and it's still a surprise, of it it's not clear what has happened, but for those of you who have been there for months, you should have been used to it long ago.

MagicStar is not the most stable IRC network. This is clear to most people. Netsplits happen -- a lot. Several times a day, in fact. But commenting on every one of them is like commenting on every car that drives by on the street, or every person that walks by at a Disney theme park, or every shot the Democratic presidential hopefuls take at Bush. It's old, it's unnecessary, and it's inane. Stop it.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

I hate it when people say "wb" when we join back up.

I got sick of explaining about 5 years ago.

Spoon says it deliberately because he knows how much I hate it :P

Of course, I may agree or disagree, but since I just baven't been on IRC at ALL lately, for whatever reason, I have no comment whatsoever.

This is why I don't respond to most people when I am greeted by glomps, huggles, and whatever else happens to the the common method of happily greeting people. I come in, I say my entrance line, and I'm done with it. If people notice and greet me with a "Hi, MB", I'm fine with that. If they greet me with anything much more enthusiastic, it's probably not going to get much of a response, save for something from about three people, and one of them doesn't do anything when I sign in.

the thing I hate most about IRC is...

people
who talk
like this
with
one
or two
words
per line.

Well, that and people who DEMAND tech support immediately. But that doesn't so much happen around reallife.

Oh, right, and people who claim to know more than they do and present it as fact, which ends up causing confusion or stupidness to others.

And stupid pranks like ALT-FXRACER.

bleh, I guess there's a lot of things.
If all else fails, use fire.

I enjoy commenting on netsplits. I find them amusing. Even when I am one of the victims. Sorry if it ticks you off, Martin, but don't expect me to stop any time soon. :P

Of course, I rarely get on IRC any more either. Life (and KOTOR) keeps me busy.

I like the way this guy put it:
Accipiter on Everything2.com wrote: Don't you love those keen observers? You know, the ones who notice everything about their environment? Nothing gets past these people.

You're sitting in an IRC channel, and there's a tremendous netsplit. Around 20-25 people are disconnected, and almost on cue, someone will say:

"Netsplit."

Do these people honestly think that the rest of the channel missed it? That somehow, their pointing it out compensated for the 25 or so quit messages?

This is analogous to sitting at a window seat in a restaurant, witnessing a 30 car traffic collision right outside, standing up afterward and saying "Car Accident." while pointing out the window.

amlthrawn, that is hardly a fair comparison. Car accidents of that size usually kill people. Death is not amusing in the least. No one dies in a netsplit.

A more fair comparison would be if you saw a parade of people marching down the street and they all trip at once and fall over each other into a giant heap. Their pride might be injured, they may have a bruise or two, but they are still ok. To jump up, say something, and laugh at THAT would be (at least for me) a normal reaction.

That would be an unusual occurence (unless it was my high school's marching band). But the channel gets so many netsplits everyday that there's no reason to point it out.

Was there ever a time you didn't laugh at your high school's marching band?

Wait, I'm asking the wrong person that. You're more serious than I am, and that's saying something. :P

Despite the infamous collander incident.

Either way, I am rarely online during a split, so I hope you forgive me if I still make a big deal out of it. If not......

/me shrugs.

Fair enough. Offense, noted. However, I didn't the gentleman I was quoting was saying that car accidents were funny. I merely thought he was pointing out the sheer ridiculousness of pointing out something so painfully obvious. Though I see how the exaggeration (30 cars) would imply otherwise.

My heartfelt apologies to anyone who was offended.

Yeah, my first two years, when they had skill. Then they fired the award-winning band instructor, and everything went downhill.

My problem with IRC is MP3 or status scripts.

It'll go something like this:

<Person1> Happy chatter
<Person2> Happy response
<IdiotAsswipe> ONOZ I AM PLAYEENG $^*_%#50 CENT IN DA CLUB%&*)+#
* Person1 IS PLAYING *************LEET SUPER COOL COMEDY ALBUM 5555############

Someone ALWAYS has to follow up after one of those status or MP3 scripts are done.

And they're always randomly started... no rhyme or reason to when the first one gets played.

I admit, I've been a culprit occasionally, but I've watched this happen many many many more times than I have actually done this.

Not to mention that I never like the music any of them are playing... but that's just a personal beef ^_^;;
