eBay listings

Post by Smaointe » Sun Sep 14, 2003 8:17 am

Seems like this week is "Emma rant week".

I collect Wedgwood Jasper (china). Occasionally I pick up some unusual pieces on eBay.

What REALLY annoys me is when someone places an item up for auction, say, a very common light blue ashtray (dime a dozen) but feels the need to write "RARE" in the description.

***RARE BLUE WEDGWOOD JASPER ASHTRAY!!!***

Please leave out the words "lovely", "rare", "beautiful", "stunning", etc. Some items are indeed rare, but as a general rule, those listings with the word ***RARE!!!*** in them are actually the very common ashtrays, pin trays and butter trays that everyone has a dozen of.

You are much more likely to get my business if you forgo the asterisks, 10 million exclamation marks and upper case, and put something more descriptive.

Please write in lower case, it is much easier for me to browse the listings. You may think that you are catching my attention by SHOUTING YOUR DESCRIPTION AT ME, but in fact since 99% of people on eBay do this, it is actually the lower case items that stand out. I ignore "RARE STUNNING WEDGWOOD TRAY" listings, I look at "1850s crimson jasper tray - mint in box, Pegasus relief". Upper case does not make your item more exciting, nor does it make me fumble for my Visa card.

Also, do a little research! Do a quick search on Google for some different Wedgwood designs. Those thimbles are not "dancing girl". That is one of the Dancing Hours. That medallion is not a "chariot" it is Aurora.

With 600 or so listings for Jasperware, it's pretty competitive and you guys really need to get your act together - quit trying to scream over the top of each other. Your target market is most likely collectors with a little knowledge - they are going to see through your cluelessness.

Oh, and another thing. Do not write your description like this:
THIS IS A ONE OF A KIND PIECE OF WEDGWOOD IT WOULD APPEAR TO BE A SPECIAL COMMISIONED PEICE. IT HAS A PICTURE OF THE HORSE GUARDS BUILDING IN LONDON. UNDERNEATH THE PICTURE IT HAS WRITERN HORSE GUARDS LONDON WEDGWOOD GROUP LONG SERVICE AWARD 1978 DORIS CHAWNER 1947. THE JASPER PLAQUE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION IT IS IN A VERY NICE WOODEN FRAME ALTHOUGH THERE IS A COUPLE OF SCRAPS ON THE FRAME BUT THEY COULD EASILY BE DISCUISED. THIS IS A NICE HEAVY PIECE. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE EMAIL ME I WILL BE HAPPY TO REPLY. THE SIZE OF THIS ITEM INCLUDING THE FRAME IS SIX AND A HALF INCHES BY SIX AND A HALF INCHES, GOOD LUCK AND THANKYOU FOR LOOKING DONT FORGET TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE OTHER ITEMS I HAVE LISTED. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH MY PHOTOS OF THIS ITEM PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I CAN SEND THEM TO YOU.
Upper case makes baby Emma cry.

Two things that bother me the most. Well, 3. When people string together a title full of nothing but adjectives, when people incorrectly identify a clothing line(i.e calling it Lip Service when it quite obviously is NOT) and when people overprice an item. Sometimes I'll see a nice looking new item, but the price seems a bit high, and I'll find that item for resale, and it will be 10-20 dollars less! The whole POINT of Ebay is to sell your items for less than a website would that's selling the same thing. Especially if it's been used!

Last night after I wrote this thread, I found something on eBay that I have wanted for a very VERY long time. It is a limited edition figurine, and is priced around $540 here in Australia. I gave up on it a long time ago, because there just wasn't any place that I could get one here (being limited edition and released a while ago), and buying on ebay would mean some nasty postage rates.. I didn't really want to spend about $700 on it.

After I did my usual "Wedgwood Jasper" searches, I thought I would look at some other things out of interest.. so I searched for this figurine, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw one there for $170 US using the But It Now feature. The auction was set to finish in 9 hours, and I was scared someone in the US was going to wake up (by then it was early Sunday morning there) and bid on it, which would ruin the Buy It Now thing.

The only reason I hesitated: they only shipped to US addresses. ARGH.

WHERE WERE YOU ALL LAST NIGHT WHEN I NEEDED YOU?

My ICQ list was completely devoid of Americans for me to butter up..

Finally I decided I couldn't miss the opportunity, and hit the Buy It Now button, hoping that one of mum's US friends would be nice enough to ship it out for me. Luckily, he is all too happy.. phew!

So, all up, over here, it would cost around $550 including postage. Through the wonderful folks at eBay, it will cost around $350, including postage and insurance over here.

I swear I nearly wet myself when I found it.

This is the one I bought:

and this is one that I already have:

I'm SO excited.

Edit: the second one is called "Computer Wizard". It has two dragons talking through tomato tins for the modem, a mouse (real one) on the mouse pad and a crystal ball as the actual computer - with a holographic error message. It's so sweet.
