I think the protest-happy hippies have their hearts in the right place, but their heads up their backsides. I personally don't condone the killing and destruction of war, but sometimes it is an inevitability. It is a good aspiration to want to not see any war take place, but to protest it in the light of certain events demonstrates a lack of understanding of the big picture.
It'd be interesting to ask the hippies what they would do if someone came after them with a knife. Would they attempt to stop them, or would they simply let the person stab them repeatedly... their inaction being a form of non-violent protest against their own murder? Speaking of non-violent protest.. ever notice how the non-violent folks always seem to be the ones to start the riots when the police show up?
"I'm opposed to violence! If you can't understand that, I'll throw this brick at you, you tool of the political machine!"
Besides, how many of the people the hippies are throwing stuff at genuinely expected to be involved in this war? I'm sure many... not all.. maybe not even the majority.. but still many people that joined the military expected a fairly routine tour of duty with some "police" work in the interest of security. Many of them probably didn't expect to be shipped out and told to shoot anything that gets within 100 yards of their position. I'm sure there are folks in the military that, themselves, don't think the war effort is a great idea.. but they have to do as they are commanded.
For my two cents, throwing stuff at people in uniform in protest of military action isn't an issue of political views.... it's just a blatant display of disrespect for a fellow human being.
