What scifi or fantasy world would you wish to live in?
Re: What scifi or fantasy world would you wish to live in?
I mention Dune because I just finished reading it last night. Many times while reading it, I was thinking to myself, "Dang, glad I don't live in their world!"
1.) Stories with the "The One" can be okay, but having to live in a world that featured one is inherently annoying unless they were far removed from where ever I personally happened to live. Even Herbert himself said he wrote Dune to show that superheroes suck.
2.) Strongly feudal societies are also inherently annoying.
3.) I have no interest in the majority of melange-induced insights, so there's no bonus there...
4.) Becoming a Reverend Mother, or even a regular Bene Gesserit would involve selling your soul to a group that puts you in a breeding program. Downright horrific for me to think about personally participating in. Besides that, his world is REALLY gender-defined. Like the messiah thing, it's not a bad thing to read about but it would be really annoying to have to live with the expectations and limitations that are in his world. He never stops writing about gender differences, they totally imbue the universe. Bleh.
For the other benefits, I would far prefer the Ringworld universe. That is a darned interesting place. Not the Ringworld itself so much, but the variety of the alien life and the state of Earth and humankind.
I was discussing this with my sister actually… I think I would like a universe where I can make cool things. Star Trek (NG version) is high on my list (Holodeck programmer, anyone?) and so is Hunter x Hunter.
Third Age Middle Earth is also hard to beat – like Ringworld, the interesting species interactions and bizarre, errm, technology would make life quite interesting in the right occupation.
Also, being in the Pirates of Caribbean universe has high potential to kick ass.

After a lot of thought, my top five...
5. Tron. (The original movie, not the new game). I want to drive a recognizer and a light cycle!
4.Star Trek. Klingons, Ferengi, and Borg...Oh my!
3.The Flintstones. Brontasaurus burgers and gigantic racks of ribs....YUMMY!
2.Monty Python' and The Holy Grail. Would love to visit the Castle Anthrax, but not Camelot - 'tis a silly place.
and for # 1.(drum roll please)
Hercules/Xena. Xena and Gabrielle - 'Nuff said

spaceballs, definitely spaceballs
i don't hate everyone equally, there are levels. but none of them are the traditionally thought of standards for predjudice. its not based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation its based on how much the person annoys me personally. i count you as a friend since you annoy me very little. brittney spears is an enemy because even though i don't know her/care about her at all she still finds a way to annoy me every time i turn on the tv

Berserk universe-only if I get a behelit though. I'd turn over my best friend for power.
Sorry Jay.
(I'd probably wind up being like Conrad...just sit around laughing..."Ho ho ho ho!")
Hellsing Universe-only if i get to be a vampire though. and a REAL vampire, not one of thiose Millenium microchip infused sissies.
Abarat universe-There's just something cool about living on an island where it's always midnight. If you haven't read the books, I highly recommend them.
Final Fantasy 8 Universe-Flying military Academies, swords with guns on them and the ability to summon god-like beings of elemental destruction? sign me up Dude.
Too many to choose....

I think I might have to change my submission for this thread, as my first one is 2 months shy of two years (!)
After much thinking, I'd say Ghost In The Shell, namely the Stand Alone Complex variety. Cyberbrains, cyborg bodies, the ability to access the internet in your head (hey look guys, i'm IRCing with no hands!), and the virtually limitless ways to expand your intelligence (eg tell your mind to read up on certain sites in your sleep...instant intelligence build!), and of course, who can forget the Tachikoma. The cute child-minded killing machines.

The Matrix, based on the assumption that any actual gamer (as opposed to some poorly actualized hacker) would be near-omnipotent within the Matrix. Most gamers are very used to accepting bizarre and unlikely occurrences, they generally have a greater tolerance for weirdness before disbelief kicks in. Thus, as the first Matrix implied that all the resistance fighters' powers are based off of how well they disjoin themselves from the 'reality' of the Matrix, a gamer (or anyone with an over-active imagination/suspension of disbelief) would be much more powerful.
